Jerry Jones has spent the offseason talking like a man ready to push chips to the middle of the table, and Dak Prescott is fully on board.
The Cowboys’ recent run of roster moves has already shown a different level of aggressiveness. Last season, Dallas sent Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers for two first-round picks and defensive tackle Kenny Clark.
One of those picks, along with a second-rounder in 2026, then helped land Quinnen Williams at the deadline. This offseason, the Cowboys added defensive end Rashan Gary in a trade with the Packers, and Jones has hinted the work may not be finished.
At the first press conference of training camp, Jones said he would be willing to "give up the future" to land another game-changing player, and he pointed to the Los Angeles Rams as a model. Jones said he likes the way the Rams have been taking big swings, including trading for cornerback Trent McDuffie and two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett this offseason.
Prescott was asked Thursday about Jones’ comments and the broader shift in approach. For a franchise that has usually been cautious with these kinds of moves, the quarterback made clear he likes the new tone.
“It’s amazing. To watch what's happened over the last couple years, and to see [Jerry’s] mind and his urgency. Life is about urgency and nothing is promised," Prescott said via Patrik Walker.
He boiled his view down even further with three words: “Why not now?”
Of course, the real test is whether Jones will actually follow through. Cowboys fans have heard bold talk before, only to watch the finish line move. In 2024, Jones hinted at a major deadline splash and instead sent a fourth-round pick for wide receiver Jonathan Mingo.
That move did not pay off, and there’s a strong chance Mingo won’t even be on the roster this season. Still, Jones did show last year that he’ll make the right deal when he believes it’s there, as he did with Quinnen Williams.
This year, the name that keeps coming up is Maxx Crosby of the Las Vegas Raiders. Dallas tried to trade for him during the offseason, and Jones was asked directly about Crosby. He said the teams never walked away from a trade, but he wouldn’t say more because of tampering.
Crosby would be a major addition, but he’s not the only kind of move that could change the look of this defense. The question now is simple: will Jones really sell the future, or is this just another round of Cowboys talk?
