Dak Prescott didn’t exactly dress up the Cowboys’ offensive situation on Thursday.
When asked about Dallas’ identity on that side of the ball, the quarterback gave a blunt answer: “Yeah sure, I mean, is it one we’re proud of? I don’t know,” the former Mississippi State Bulldogs star quarterback replied, via Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News.
That kind of line says plenty, especially with the Cowboys sitting at 3-5 and trying to make sense of an offense that has been productive in some areas but uneven in others. Through eight weeks of the 2026 NFL season, Dallas ranks seventh in the league with 27.4 points per game. At the same time, the Cowboys are only 13th in total offense at 342.0 yards per game.
The ground game has been part of the issue. Dallas is averaging just 94.1 rushing yards per contest, a number that leaves only seven teams below them in the league. Even so, the Cowboys have found the end zone on the ground at a solid clip, ranking fifth with 1.25 rushing scores per game.
Prescott’s comments came after a rough Week 8 loss to Gardner Minshew II and the Arizona Cardinals in Arlington. Dallas held a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter before letting it slip away in a 33-30 overtime defeat. The Cowboys also came up empty on their overtime possession.
Now the focus shifts to Sunday, when Prescott and the Cowboys head to Lucas Oil Stadium to face the Indianapolis Colts.

Quinnen Williams Sounds Off As Cowboys Defense Hits Breaking Point
With the Cowboys sitting at 3-5 and trying to steady a defense that has repeatedly put them in a hole, Quinnen Williams has emerged as one of the few bright spots on that side of the ball. His production has stood out even in a difficult season, but he has also taken ownership of some of the units shortcomings, a sign of how much pressure is building around a group that has struggled to find consistency.
As Dallas turns its attention to the Colts in Week 9, the bigger question is whether Williams can help spark a turnaround before the season slips further out of reach. The defense has reached a breaking point, and while Williams has been part of the solution at times, the Cowboys still need more from everyone around him if they want to stop the slide. [Read more 🡒]
Cowboys Secondary Is Already Emerging As A Long Term Draft Priority
The Cowboys defense has been one of the early disappointments of the season, with the unit sitting near the bottom of the league in both total defense and pass defense. That kind of performance tends to sharpen the focus on the draft board, and one recent 2027 NFL mock draft already has Dallas looking to the secondary for help, projecting Georgia cornerback Ellis Robinson IV as a future fit.
Robinson has put together a strong college rsum and would give the Cowboys a young corner with the kind of upside teams covet when they start thinking beyond the current roster. The fit becomes even more interesting if Dallas eventually decides to move on from DaRon Bland, which would leave a clear opening for another long-term piece in a secondary that needs more stability. Colts Land In A Week 9 Spot With Bigger Stakes Than Expected
Dallas entered November at 3-5 after a loss to the Arizona Cardinals, and the margin for error has all but disappeared as the schedule turns to the Colts in Week 9. DraftKings Sportsbook has Dallas favored by six points, which only sharpens the pressure around a game that feels bigger than a typical midseason matchup for a team trying to steady itself and keep its season from drifting further off course.
The stakes go beyond one result on Sunday. Depending on how this one plays out, the Cowboys could be forced to make some hard decisions before the trade deadline, with the front office weighing whether to stand pat or make a move to try to salvage the season. For a team already in must-win territory, the Colts are arriving at a moment when the ripple effects could reach well past the final score. [Read more 🡒]
