Dak Prescott isn’t treating the Cowboys’ upcoming work with the Rams like a routine stop in August. He’s already framing it as something bigger, with Dallas set to use next week’s joint practice in Los Angeles as an early measuring stick against one of the NFC’s top contenders.
After a few practices in training camp, Prescott said he likes the atmosphere around the team and pointed to the offense’s push to get sharper in the red zone. Then he turned his attention to the Rams, making it clear he’s eager for the matchup.
“It’s all you can ask for,” Prescott said. “CeeDee [Lamb] was just talking about it today, looking forward to Tuesday. Looking forward to just us getting better, understanding this is a team that we're going to play in the season, and it's probably a team that if we want to get to where we want to get to, we're going to have to see them again.
“So call this probably the first of three meetings, I'd assume if everybody takes care of business. It's definitely going to be a test, it's going to be fun."
That comment is what gives the whole thing its edge. Prescott was joking, sure, but the idea behind it is serious: Dallas wants to be in the kind of postseason conversation where a matchup with Sean McVay’s Rams is just the start, not the finish.
For Brian Schottenheimer’s team, the joint session should provide an immediate read on where it stands. These kinds of practices have become valuable for first-team units, and this one gives the Cowboys a chance to see how they stack up before the games start counting.
The two teams are already scheduled to meet again in the regular season on Dec. 15. With that playoff history between Dallas and Los Angeles, the Week 15 game could end up carrying real weight in the NFC race.
