The Dallas Cowboys still have roster decisions hanging over them before the August 30 deadline, and one of the most surprising names in the mix is Marist Liufau.
A player who looked like he had carved out a real role over his first two seasons now finds himself in an uncertain spot. Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton recently pointed to Liufau as Dallas’ top cut candidate ahead of the 2026 season, tying that possibility to a position change and what he sees as a shaky fit in new defensive coordinator Christian Parker’s system.
That would be a sharp turn for a third-round pick from the 2024 NFL Draft. Liufau has appeared in 34 games and made 14 starts across his first two years, and he is still on his four-year, $5.6 million rookie contract that runs through 2027.
His 2024 season was his strongest yet, as he finished with 50 tackles, four tackles for loss, three pass deflections, two forced fumbles and two quarterback hits. Those numbers helped him earn more defensive responsibility.
But the way Dallas is handling him in camp suggests the staff is still sorting out exactly what he is supposed to be.
DallasCowboys.com reporter Patrik Walker described Liufau’s usage during training camp on July 30. Walker wrote on X, “Christian Parker is doing some things with Marist Liufau.
I just saw Liufau start off-ball, drop down to OLB and then back to off-ball centerfield, all in one rep.” Walker added, “Liufau was directing traffic post-snap, in real time, as well.”
Parker’s vision seems to be built around movement and adaptability. In February, he said, “The first thing is we’re going to be multiple.”
He explained that the defense will change fronts and coverages depending on personnel and situation. That kind of setup can be a plus for a player with Liufau’s range.
It can also leave someone without a fixed home exposed.
Brian Schottenheimer recently addressed Liufau’s role as the staff keeps evaluating where he fits. “I love Marist’s versatility,” Schottenheimer said.
“Unfortunately for Marist, I mean, that is what it is. What spot are you playing?
Well, you’re a linebacker.”
Schottenheimer praised Liufau’s ability and his knack for forcing turnovers, but the message was still plain enough: nothing is settled yet. With final cuts approaching, Liufau stands out as one of the most intriguing names to watch in Dallas.
