The Dallas Cowboys may have to wait a lot longer if they’re hoping to pry Maxx Crosby away from the Las Vegas Raiders.
A new wrinkle in the Crosby trade chatter came from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, who reported that after the failed trade with the Baltimore Ravens, the Los Angeles Rams made a push for the star edge rusher too. But Crosby reportedly shut that door.
“My understanding is after the trade from the Baltimore Ravens failed, the Rams stepped in and actually tried to trade for Maxx Crosby,” Rapoport said.
“He told the Rams that any other teams interested, 'I do not want to go.' He wanted to remain with the Raiders, an improved Raiders team that is going to see him today," Rap added.
That obviously makes things tougher for Dallas, which had already been in the mix for Crosby before he was dealt to the Ravens. The Cowboys reportedly made multiple offers to Las Vegas, but those bids didn’t match what Baltimore put on the table.
Even after that setback - and after Baltimore ultimately nixed the deal - Jerry Jones left the door open.
“We’re pretty far down the road relative to what our plans are,” he said. “So while I don’t anticipate it, I don’t want to rule anything out.”
For now, the situation points away from a quick Cowboys strike for the five-time Pro Bowler. Still, the NFL has a way of changing fast, and Crosby’s stance could shift if Las Vegas slips again.
His desire to move this offseason came from the losing and dysfunction he’s dealt with during his time there. The Raiders are rebuilding, but there’s no guarantee that rebuild turns into anything stable. If the season goes sideways, Crosby could again find himself wanting out.
Even so, any real movement would likely be a while off. At this point, no one should expect action before the Nov. 10 trade deadline.
Dallas, though, may not be done. The team has added edge rushers, but if those moves don’t pay off, a swing for Crosby would still make sense. And even if they do, Jones has made it clear all offseason that he’s open to something “substantive” to upgrade the defense.
He doubled down on that last week, saying the Cowboys are “in play” for a trade at any point.
