The Cowboys may have brought George Pickens to Dallas as a clear No. 2, but one strong season has already pushed the conversation into uncomfortable territory: what if the team eventually has to pick between Pickens and CeeDee Lamb?
That was never supposed to be the debate. Dallas traded for Pickens last season because it needed another receiver, and the talent was obvious from the start.
A second-round pick out of Georgia in 2022, Pickens had already shown he could produce with the Steelers even while dealing with uneven quarterback play. The hope in Dallas was simple: give him a better setup, let him raise his value, and maybe set himself up for a bigger payday in free agency.
The bigger concern around Pickens was never his hands or his route running. It was maturity and effort.
There were a few bumps in his first year with the Cowboys, including the Monday Night Football game against the Las Vegas Raiders when he and Lamb were both sidelined after breaking team rules. But even with those issues, Pickens’ first season in Dallas still landed as a clear success.
He just didn’t land the long-term deal he wanted. Instead, Pickens will play on the franchise tag this season, still chasing more security and still making it known that he wants to stay in Dallas.
The problem is the money. Lamb is already on an average of $34 million per season, and keeping Pickens around on a new contract would force the Cowboys into a very expensive corner.
The usual expectation is that Pickens will be the one who has to go if Dallas wants to lock in a long-term deal. But Bryan Broaddus and Gavin Dawson of 105.3 The Fan floated a much more surprising possibility: could the Cowboys decide the younger Pickens is the better bet and move on from Lamb instead?
That idea would have sounded outrageous a year ago. It doesn’t now, at least not as much, after Pickens’ breakout season.
He led the team in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns, and Broaddus said there was a stretch when Pickens was the best receiver on the team in 2025. That led Dawson to wonder whether Dallas might be tempted to build around Pickens as its future WR1.
“Yeah, that's kind of where I was going to conclude this is if you do feel like Pickens at 25 has a brighter future than CeeDee at 27, I think this is a big year for CeeDee if you're picking we're only keeping one wide receiver,” Dawson said.
The numbers back up why the discussion even exists. Pro Football Focus gave Pickens an 85.9 overall grade, which ranked seventh among wide receivers. Lamb checked in at 77.6, good for 23rd, and behind Pickens.
Broaddus still pointed out the part of Lamb’s game that separates him from Pickens. Lamb has the more complete route tree, and he can line up on the boundary or in the slot. Pickens filled in some of that work while Lamb was out with a high ankle sprain, but Broaddus made it clear that this is still where Lamb holds the edge.

Pickens does have the age advantage, even if it’s a small one. And that’s enough to make the question worth asking: if Pickens keeps looking like the bigger threat, is the safer long-term move to stick with the younger receiver?
The Cowboys don’t have to answer that right now. But after one season from Pickens, the conversation is already on the table.
