Cowboys Suddenly Have A Joey Porter Jr. Problem Again

Cowboys cornerback Joey Porter Jr.'s availability against the Colts remains in doubt as his ankle injury continues to impact his participation and game readiness.

Joey Porter Jr.’s Week 9 outlook is suddenly murky again, and the Dallas Cowboys are back to waiting on their newest cornerback.

Porter, who has been dealing with an ankle injury since Week 6, was a full participant on Wednesday before taking a step backward on Thursday. Jon Machota of The Athletic reported that Dallas downgraded him to limited participation, leaving his status in doubt for Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts.

That’s a tough turn for a player the Cowboys acquired in September, sending a 2028 second-round pick and a conditional 2027 sixth-round pick to the Pittsburgh Steelers to get him. The hope was obvious: add a proven defensive back and stabilize the secondary. Instead, Porter’s early run in Dallas has been interrupted by injuries and uneven availability.

He has already been on the field for less than half of the defensive snaps in two of the three games he’s played. Against the Green Bay Packers in Week 6, he logged 36 snaps. He played 51 snaps in Week 7 against the Philadelphia Eagles, then dropped back to 36 snaps in Week 8 against the Arizona Cardinals.

If Porter can’t go, Dallas will have to piece together the cornerback group with DaRon Bland, Cobie Durant, Ameer Speed and Shavon Revel Jr. carrying the load.

Porter entered the league as the No. 32 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and built a strong reputation over his first three seasons with Pittsburgh. In that span, he posted 165 tackles, one sack, 31 passes defensed and three interceptions.

Before the NFL, he starred at Penn State from 2019-22, finishing with 115 tackles, one sack, one forced fumble, 17 passes defensed and one interception.

Quinnen Williams Sounds Off As Cowboys Defense Hits Breaking Point

With the Cowboys sitting at 3-5 and trying to steady a defense that has repeatedly put them in a hole, Quinnen Williams has emerged as one of the few bright spots on that side of the ball. His production has stood out even in a difficult season, but he has also taken ownership of some of the units shortcomings, a sign of how much pressure is building around a group that has struggled to find consistency.

As Dallas turns its attention to the Colts in Week 9, the bigger question is whether Williams can help spark a turnaround before the season slips further out of reach. The defense has reached a breaking point, and while Williams has been part of the solution at times, the Cowboys still need more from everyone around him if they want to stop the slide. Cowboys Secondary Is Already Emerging As A Long Term Draft Priority

The Cowboys defense has been one of the early disappointments of the season, with the unit sitting near the bottom of the league in both total defense and pass defense. That kind of performance tends to sharpen the focus on the draft board, and one recent 2027 NFL mock draft already has Dallas looking to the secondary for help, projecting Georgia cornerback Ellis Robinson IV as a future fit.

Robinson has put together a strong college rsum and would give the Cowboys a young corner with the kind of upside teams covet when they start thinking beyond the current roster. The fit becomes even more interesting if Dallas eventually decides to move on from DaRon Bland, which would leave a clear opening for another long-term piece in a secondary that needs more stability. Colts Land In A Week 9 Spot With Bigger Stakes Than Expected

Dallas entered November at 3-5 after a loss to the Arizona Cardinals, and the margin for error has all but disappeared as the schedule turns to the Colts in Week 9. DraftKings Sportsbook has Dallas favored by six points, which only sharpens the pressure around a game that feels bigger than a typical midseason matchup for a team trying to steady itself and keep its season from drifting further off course.

The stakes go beyond one result on Sunday. Depending on how this one plays out, the Cowboys could be forced to make some hard decisions before the trade deadline, with the front office weighing whether to stand pat or make a move to try to salvage the season. For a team already in must-win territory, the Colts are arriving at a moment when the ripple effects could reach well past the final score. [Read more 🡒]
