Cowboys Suddenly Have A George Pickens Problem They Need To Solve

With questions swirling around playing time, injuries, and coaching decisions, the Cowboys face mounting pressure to address both offensive and defensive challenges.

The Cowboys’ defensive problems keep circling back to the same place: execution.

That was the message from defensive tackle Quinnen Williams after another rough stretch for a unit that has struggled to find any real consistency in 2026. Williams said the film made the issue obvious.

“The biggest thing is execute,” defensive tackle Quinnen Williams said. “We got to execute.

We haven’t been executing this whole season. We executed for three quarters and didn’t execute that last quarter, and the film says it all.

We have to execute and stack days.”

Dallas is also dealing with a thin secondary heading into Sunday’s matchup with the Indianapolis Colts. The Cowboys had 11 players who didn’t practice Wednesday or were limited because of injury, including corner Caleb Downs and safety P.J.

Locke. Both were concussed in Sunday’s 33-30 overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals, and head coach Brian Schottenheimer said Wednesday that both were still in concussion protocol.

Downs and Locke were on the field during practice wearing helmets, but they were not taking part in drills.

Schottenheimer also addressed another Cowboys storyline that has drawn plenty of attention lately: the reduced snaps for wide receiver George Pickens.

Pickens’ playing time has dropped noticeably over the last few weeks, sparking speculation about what was behind it. Clarence Hill of DLLS Cowboys said Schottenheimer explained that Pickens’ snaps have been limited by injuries and that he has also been pulled because of his work in the run game.

“Brian Schottenheimer told me that George Pickens snaps have been limited by his injuries,” Clarence Hill of DLLS Cowboys said. “He has been taken off the field because blocking in the run game.”

Schottenheimer also said it “would be poor coaching by me” to keep Pickens off the field for any reason.

That explanation fits with Pickens’ injury history, since he was added to the injury report in Week 7 because of a shoulder issue and remained on it through last week.

Linebacker Shemar James echoed the same broader theme when he talked about the defense’s mindset. For him, the urgency never really changes from week to week.

“I feel there’s a sense of urgency every week, whether we win or lose, because every week is a dogfight,” James added. “I mean, we’re in a National Football League, so there’s not going to be a week that we have circled like, ‘Oh, we’re going to beat these guys.’

“You can’t take [a game] off. Every week, we have a sense of urgency to go out there and execute, and it just didn’t get done this weekend. And that’s why we have another week to go out there and prove to people that we’re the defense that we know we can be.”

Off the field, Jerry Jones’ spending habits were also part of the conversation. Jones said earlier this week that he didn’t see any connection between how much a team pays a head coach and whether it wins. Dan Wetzel of ESPN pointed to that stance, along with a quote from a coaching agent who told NFL Network’s Jane Slater, “Jerry won’t pay $13M and up, and that’s the starting point.”

Dallas promoted Schottenheimer from within after the 2024 season, and he was the only coach the Cowboys interviewed that year. Wetzel noted that Schottenheimer could still become a good coach despite his 10-14-1 start, but questioned whether the most valuable team in the league should be led by someone still learning the job.

Quinnen Williams Sounds Off As Cowboys Defense Hits Breaking Point

With the Cowboys sitting at 3-5 and trying to steady a defense that has repeatedly put them in a hole, Quinnen Williams has emerged as one of the few bright spots on that side of the ball. His production has stood out even in a difficult season, but he has also taken ownership of some of the units shortcomings, a sign of how much pressure is building around a group that has struggled to find consistency.

As Dallas turns its attention to the Colts in Week 9, the bigger question is whether Williams can help spark a turnaround before the season slips further out of reach. The defense has reached a breaking point, and while Williams has been part of the solution at times, the Cowboys still need more from everyone around him if they want to stop the slide. Cowboys Secondary Is Already Emerging As A Long Term Draft Priority

The Cowboys defense has been one of the early disappointments of the season, with the unit sitting near the bottom of the league in both total defense and pass defense. That kind of performance tends to sharpen the focus on the draft board, and one recent 2027 NFL mock draft already has Dallas looking to the secondary for help, projecting Georgia cornerback Ellis Robinson IV as a future fit.

Robinson has put together a strong college rsum and would give the Cowboys a young corner with the kind of upside teams covet when they start thinking beyond the current roster. The fit becomes even more interesting if Dallas eventually decides to move on from DaRon Bland, which would leave a clear opening for another long-term piece in a secondary that needs more stability. Colts Land In A Week 9 Spot With Bigger Stakes Than Expected

Dallas entered November at 3-5 after a loss to the Arizona Cardinals, and the margin for error has all but disappeared as the schedule turns to the Colts in Week 9. DraftKings Sportsbook has Dallas favored by six points, which only sharpens the pressure around a game that feels bigger than a typical midseason matchup for a team trying to steady itself and keep its season from drifting further off course.

The stakes go beyond one result on Sunday. Depending on how this one plays out, the Cowboys could be forced to make some hard decisions before the trade deadline, with the front office weighing whether to stand pat or make a move to try to salvage the season. For a team already in must-win territory, the Colts are arriving at a moment when the ripple effects could reach well past the final score. [Read more 🡒]
