Cowboys Suddenly Face A Very Different Bucs Test On Short Rest

Despite a shaky start and a rookie quarterback under center, Tampa Bay's resilient defense could pose a threat to the Cowboys in their Week 5 clash.

The Cowboys are stepping into a short-week test that looks a lot different from the one they probably expected a few days ago.

Dallas is back to work after erasing a 10-point halftime deficit and beating Houston 34-30 on Sunday, and now it has to turn around quickly for Thursday night against a Tampa Bay team that arrives in Dallas at 0-4. The Buccaneers are coming off a 17-14 loss to Green Bay, but that record alone doesn’t capture how they’ve looked through the first month: injuries, uneven quarterback play and an offense that hasn’t finished enough drives have all been part of the picture. Even so, Tampa Bay’s defense has kept the team in the fight.

The biggest change for this matchup is at quarterback. Baker Mayfield, who was supposed to be the center of Tampa Bay’s offense this season, won’t play after suffering a dislocated right thumb in Week 3.

Through three games, he had thrown for 615 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions while completing 63.5% of his passes, and he also ran for 65 yards and a score. He is expected to miss at least three games, which means the Buccaneers will turn again to rookie Jalon Daniels.

Daniels made his first NFL start against Green Bay in Week 4 and finished 19 of 30 for 148 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. He also added 64 rushing yards on nine carries, giving Tampa a different kind of look when he leaves the pocket.

There were some encouraging stretches, but the Buccaneers couldn’t cash in on enough chances. Daniels also threw an interception that helped lead to a Packers field goal, and Tampa’s final possession never produced the winning drive it needed.

That makes Thursday a much different quarterback challenge for Dallas than it would have been against Mayfield. Instead of facing a veteran with more than 100 NFL games behind him, the Cowboys will see a rookie making his second career start on a short week and on the road.

Still, Tampa Bay is not short on skill talent. Bucky Irving has been one of the team’s most important offensive pieces, rushing for 241 yards on 56 carries with a 4.3-yard average and adding 61 receiving yards. Chris Godwin Jr. has 16 catches for 142 yards, while second-year receiver Emeka Egbuka has become a bigger part of the passing game with 15 receptions for 154 yards and a touchdown.

Cade Otton has also been a steady target. The tight end leads the Buccaneers in receiving yards with 157 on 15 catches, and his 10.5 yards per reception show how often he’s been able to move the chains.

With Daniels now running the offense, that role could matter even more. Tampa has also gotten production from Ted Hurst III, who has eight catches for 128 yards and a touchdown, and his 16.0 yards per reception is the best mark on the team among players with multiple catches.

The other side of the ball has been the main reason Tampa has stayed relevant in games. The Buccaneers have allowed fewer than 300 total yards in three straight contests, including just 283 against Green Bay, and they forced multiple turnovers in that game by recovering a fumble and intercepting Jordan Love in the fourth quarter. Through four games, they’ve allowed only nine touchdowns.

David Walker leads the team with two sacks, while Alex Anzalone and Anthony Nelson have one apiece. Josiah Trotter, Keionte Scott and Zyon McCollum have each been active early, leading the team in tackles with 17, 16 and 15 respectively.

That defense just lost one of its key pieces, though. Safety Antoine Winfield Jr. suffered a rib fracture in Sunday’s loss to Green Bay and is expected to miss two to four weeks. He had 24 tackles through the first four games and has been one of Tampa Bay’s most important defenders since entering the league.

Dallas enters the week at 2-2 and coming off its highest-scoring comeback of the season. CeeDee Lamb is fresh off a historic performance, Dak Prescott threw for 335 yards against Houston, and the Cowboys have scored at least 20 points in every game so far. Tampa Bay may be 0-4 and dealing with a quarterback change, but it still has enough weapons and enough defensive resistance to make Thursday night awkward if Dallas isn’t sharp.

Cowboys Pass Rush Problems Could Revive A Reunion Fans Never Expected

Four games into the 2026 season, the Cowboys pass rush has not produced the kind of pressure this defense needs, with just four sacks so far. That kind of slow start tends to get teams looking for outside help, and Bleacher Reports Kristopher Knox has already floated a familiar name as a possible fix: Jadeveon Clowney, now with the Texans, who are also sitting at 0-4.

The idea is not exactly new in Dallas, since the Cowboys have shown interest in Clowney before, but the fit is where the conversation gets tricky. Under Christian Parker, the defense has its own structure and demands, and there are real questions about how well Clowney would slot into it if the Cowboys decided to explore a trade market that suddenly feels more urgent than expected. Jerry Jones Just Put Pressure On Two New Cowboys To Deliver

The Cowboys latest additions from Pittsburgh arrive with the kind of built-in urgency that follows any move for young, talented players on rookie deals. Jerry Jones made clear the club is not treating contract talks as the immediate priority, which puts the spotlight squarely on George Pickens and Joey Porter Jr. to show they can help right away. Pickens has 225 yards and no touchdowns this season, while Porter is just getting started in Dallas after missing time because of injury.

For a team that has spent plenty of time talking about expectations, the message is simple enough: production comes first, and everything else comes later. Jones suggested any future negotiations will be shaped by how both players perform and how the team fares, so these early weeks matter. Pickens has to turn volume into impact, and Porter has to build on a delayed debut, because the Cowboys are making it clear that both newcomers will have to earn their next conversation. Cowboys Stole This Rivalry Win In A Way Texans Fans Will Hate

The Cowboys walked out of NRG Stadium with a 34-30 rivalry win over the Texans, and it came with the kind of late-game finish that tends to linger in this series. Dak Prescott found CeeDee Lamb for the touchdown that sealed it, a sequence that let Dallas leave Houston with bragging rights after a tight night in front of a split crowd feel.

Even before the final score settled in, the game had already drawn attention for a different reason when Instagram influencer Ene, better known as @truly.ene, went viral for her custom Houston Texans outfit. The look added another layer to a matchup that already had plenty of edge, and it turned the night into one of those crossover sports moments where the football result and the scene around it both got people talking.
