The first week in Oxnard has given Cowboys fans a lot to like. Dak Prescott has looked crisp, George Pickens has made his presence felt right away, and a handful of younger players have started to build real momentum.
But training camp in shorts and helmets only tells you so much. The pads still haven’t come on, and that means some of Dallas’ biggest roster questions are still hanging in the air. The next phase of camp should start sorting them out.
One of the biggest concerns is the linebacker group. DeMarvion Overshown has stood out as a defensive leader and appears fully back from last season’s injuries.
Marist Liufau, rookie Jaishawn Barham, and Shemar James have each had encouraging moments too. Still, practice flashes don’t answer the real question: can this group consistently hold up against the run and survive the grind of a full NFL season?
The fact that the coaching staff keeps rotating communication duties among multiple linebackers says the job is still wide open.
Another young defender drawing attention is Shavon Revel. The rookie has shown the kind of length, physicality, and competitiveness that explain why Dallas is high on his future.
He has also run into the kind of learning curve that comes with lining up against one of the league’s best contested-catch receivers. George Pickens has beaten him several times in one-on-one work, leaning on elite ball skills and the ability to finish through contact.
Those reps aren’t a setback so much as a test the Cowboys want Revel to face. The question is how much he can take from them and how quickly that growth comes.
The offensive line has also looked encouraging early on, but the real exam hasn’t started yet. Prescott has had time to work through his reads, and there haven’t been many obvious breakdowns in pass protection.
That’s a good sign, but it comes with a caveat: defensive linemen can’t fully finish plays the way they will once the hitting starts. Terence Steele has opened camp on solid footing after drawing plenty of scrutiny over the past year, and rookie Drew Shelton has made the most of his chances as he tries to strengthen his case as the team’s primary swing tackle.
Tyler Guyton and Steele will face a much tougher test once live contact is allowed.
The same goes for the pass rush. There have been splash plays from the defensive front, but the bigger question is whether that production will hold up when practice gets more physical.
Rashan Gary has looked like the disruptive veteran Dallas wanted, winning off the edge and forcing a turnover early in camp. Donovan Ezeiruaku has also impressed with his motor and his ability to bend around tackles.
Even so, the next step is the hard part: setting the edge against the run and turning pressure into actual finishes against NFL blockers.
And that’s the theme for this entire first stretch of camp. Early work has pointed to plenty of promise, but the first padded practice will say a lot more about whether Dallas is really ready in the trenches.
