The Dallas Cowboys’ defense has given them too many reasons to worry, and a new 2027 NFL mock draft points straight at the secondary as the place to start fixing things.
In Justin Melo’s latest mock for NFL Draft on SI, Dallas uses its first-round pick on Georgia cornerback Ellis Robinson IV, a move aimed at shoring up a pass defense that has been exposed all season. The Cowboys enter Week 9 with the league’s worst total defense at 385.4 yards allowed per game, and they sit No. 22 against the pass.
That kind of production leaves little room to ignore the back end, especially with Christian Parker appearing to be in over his head as defensive coordinator and the roster still lacking enough talent around the field. The situation is made even trickier by the fact that Dallas will not have its highest of two first-round picks in the 2027 draft, limiting its chances to land a top-tier difference-maker.
Melo sees Robinson as a player who could help immediately if the Cowboys decide to move on from former All-Pro DaRon Bland this offseason. He wrote, “The Dallas Cowboys are still struggling on defense despite the injection of rookie talent,” and added, “DaRon Bland has particularly struggled at cornerback. Georgia's Ellis Robinson IV is a supremely athletic cornerback who is versatile enough to thrive in both man and zone coverage.”
Robinson’s production backs up the buzz. This season, he has 15 combined tackles, five passes defensed. and two interceptions, after posting a career-high four interceptions last season. He’s been climbing draft boards, and if Dallas is still picking in the 20s, he would give the team a valuable option in a secondary that badly needs help.
The 2027 NFL Draft is scheduled for Thursday, April 29, through Saturday, May 1, at the National Mall outside of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.

Quinnen Williams Sounds Off As Cowboys Defense Hits Breaking Point
With the Cowboys sitting at 3-5 and trying to steady a defense that has repeatedly put them in a hole, Quinnen Williams has emerged as one of the few bright spots on that side of the ball. His production has stood out even in a difficult season, but he has also taken ownership of some of the units shortcomings, a sign of how much pressure is building around a group that has struggled to find consistency.
As Dallas turns its attention to the Colts in Week 9, the bigger question is whether Williams can help spark a turnaround before the season slips further out of reach. The defense has reached a breaking point, and while Williams has been part of the solution at times, the Cowboys still need more from everyone around him if they want to stop the slide. [Read more 🡒]
Colts Land In A Week 9 Spot With Bigger Stakes Than Expected
Dallas entered November at 3-5 after a loss to the Arizona Cardinals, and the margin for error has all but disappeared as the schedule turns to the Colts in Week 9. DraftKings Sportsbook has Dallas favored by six points, which only sharpens the pressure around a game that feels bigger than a typical midseason matchup for a team trying to steady itself and keep its season from drifting further off course.
The stakes go beyond one result on Sunday. Depending on how this one plays out, the Cowboys could be forced to make some hard decisions before the trade deadline, with the front office weighing whether to stand pat or make a move to try to salvage the season. For a team already in must-win territory, the Colts are arriving at a moment when the ripple effects could reach well past the final score. [Read more 🡒]
Brian Schottenheimer Is Fueling A Cowboys Fear Fans Know Too Well
Brian Schottenheimers offense left the familiar kind of unease hanging over the Cowboys after a loss that felt avoidable for long stretches. The play-calling leaned conservative, the running game never found much efficiency, and the passing concepts too often looked easy to diagnose, all of it feeding the sense that Dallas had enough talent to do more but not enough variety in how it was being used.
What stood out most was how the game management seemed to tighten when the Cowboys needed answers late. Schottenheimer has been under scrutiny before for not adapting quickly enough or closing games with conviction, and this one added to that concern, with decisions that invited second-guessing instead of settling the outcome. For a roster built to contend, the frustration is not just the loss itself, but the nagging feeling that the same old offensive problems are still waiting to show up when it matters most.
