Cowboys Secondary Battle Could Force A Big Cornerback Change

Amid the Dallas Cowboys' challenging season start, Ameer Speed has proven himself as a key player in the secondary, edging out Shavon Revel Jr. for crucial snaps.

Ameer Speed has started to separate himself in the Cowboys’ cornerback picture, and the gap with Shavon Revel Jr. is no longer subtle.

Dallas has plenty to sort through after its 2-4 start, from Brian Schottenheimer to the rest of the coaching staff and roster. The secondary has been one of the biggest pressure points, even with newly acquired Joey Porter Jr. looking like the real thing. But the spot that keeps standing out is the battle between Speed and second-year pro Shavon Revel Jr.

Revel has been working in a split role with Speed, yet the tape and the numbers both point the same direction: Speed has played better. If defensive coordinator Christian Parker leans into that and gives Speed the edge, Dallas gives itself a better shot at settling down a shaky position.

Through six weeks, Revel has logged 151 snaps, which ranks second among Cowboys cornerbacks. Speed is third with 101.

Porter Jr. is now the CB1, DaRon Bland is the CB2, and the remaining wide corner role has become a direct fight between Speed and Revel. So far, Speed has won it.

Revel has allowed 12 catches on 18 targets for 161 receiving yards across 71 coverage snaps in 2026. Next Gen Stats shows he is giving up 6.3 YAC per reception, 3.4 yards of separation, +5.7 coverage EPA, and a +6.2 percent catch rate allowed over expected.

Speed’s profile looks much cleaner. He has allowed two catches on seven targets for 17 yards and a touchdown in 48 coverage snaps. His catch rate allowed over expected sits at -9.6 percent, his coverage EPA is +0.5, and he is giving up just -1.5 YAC per reception allowed.

That edge has shown up in the workload, too. In Week 6, Revel played 17 snaps while Speed got 25. It was the second straight week Speed outsnapped Revel, and that trend needs to continue if Dallas wants its best version of the defense.

Parker has been alternating the two at one of the outside corner spots for weeks, but the Cowboys have seen enough to make a cleaner call. Whenever Revel is on the field, opposing teams have gone after him, and those chances have tended to pay off. Speed has not drawn the same kind of success from opponents.

With Bland already being a weak point at corner this season, Dallas cannot afford another vulnerable spot. The Cowboys need answers fast, and the evidence so far says Speed should be the one taking Revel’s snaps.

The staff appears to be leaning that way already, with Speed getting more work than Revel since Week 4. At this stage, the simplest move is the best one: let Speed handle the wide-corner reps, keep Revel in the CB3 role, and, when Cobie Durant returns, make sure Speed is CB4 instead of Revel.

Jerry Jones Just Added Fresh Intrigue To Cowboys Eagles Week 7

With Troy Aikmans ESPN contract set to expire after the season, Jerry Jones added another layer to the familiar Cowboys-Eagles backdrop by weighing in on what comes next for the Hall of Fame quarterback-turned-broadcaster. Jones didnt just frame Aikman as a voice on Sundays, either, praising what he can do beyond the booth and giving the discussion a little more texture than the usual end-of-contract chatter.

It also arrives at a time when the Eagles front office is getting its own nods, with Howie Roseman drawing praise from Jalen Hurts camp for the way he handled Hurts blood clot situation. With Jones and Roseman on opposite sidelines when Dallas and Philadelphia meet in Week 7, the game already had enough storyline fuel. Jones latest comments only sharpen the sense that this one will carry more than the usual NFC East edge. [Read more 🡒]

Caleb Downs Is Already Facing A Cowboys Problem He Didnt Create

Caleb Downs has already been asked to do a little of everything in his first season with the Cowboys, and that has made his adjustment more complicated than a simple rookie learning curve. Injuries and uneven play in the secondary have pushed Dallas to shuffle pieces around, and Downs has become one of the players most affected by it. A safety by trade who thrived in college in that role, he has been stretched into responsibilities that do not always match what he did best before arriving in Dallas.

The growing pains have shown up most clearly when he is lined up in the nickel, where the fit has been tougher than it looked on paper. Even so, Downs still leads the team in tackles, a sign that the production is there even if the comfort level is still catching up. For the Cowboys, the larger issue is less about one rookie adjusting and more about a secondary that has forced him into spots that ask a lot more than his natural position did. [Read more 🡒]

Cowboys Suddenly Have One Big Joey Porter Jr. Concern Against Eagles

Joey Porter Jr. has given the Cowboys an early look at why they were interested in him, even in a small sample since arriving from Pittsburgh. Over his first two games in Dallas, he has logged 61 snaps and mostly done what the team hoped in coverage, helping stabilize a position the Cowboys have been eager to shore up.

The concern now is health, not performance. Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer said Porter is dealing with an ankle issue that was re-aggravated during the recent game, and the team is monitoring his status closely with Philadelphia next on the schedule. For a defense that wants every edge it can get against the Eagles, Porter's availability suddenly matters a lot more than his early play. [Read more 🡒]
