Cowboys Roster Squeeze Is Putting These Fringe Players On Notice

As the Dallas Cowboys grapple with finalizing their roster, the cuts of key players hint at the ruthless decisions ahead to sharpen their squad before the season kicks off.

Any early buzz around the Dallas Cowboys’ addition of Von Miller got a quick dose of reality when Traeshon Holden was released, and that move may not be the last roster trim coming.

Holden’s exit came after a rough preseason outing in Seattle, where a muffed punt put him in the spotlight. The mistake itself wasn’t the reason he was cut, but it did hammer home how unforgiving roster battles can be in Week 2 of the preseason.

Dallas still has plenty of decisions ahead, and a few more players could be staring at the same kind of cold math.

Israel Abanikanda is the first name worth watching, though it would be a surprise if the Cowboys moved on from him before the second preseason game. He was Dallas’ highest-graded runner with a 74.1 grade, averaged 5.1 yards per carry, and picked up 21 yards after contact.

Brian Schottenheimer praised the way Abanikanda ran, and he has clearly made an impression as a ball carrier in camp. Still, he has to sharpen up in pass protection if he wants to secure a real role behind Javonte Williams.

If Davis has passed him on the depth chart and Dallas decides to keep Blue or Mafah, Abanikanda could wind up as the odd man out.

At tight end, DJ Rogers is another undrafted free agent the Cowboys like, but Saturday didn’t help his case. Michael Trigg flashed as a receiver, leading the team with four catches and finishing second only to Camden Brown in receiving yards.

Rogers, meanwhile, had his lone catch stripped loose after a Seahawks defensive back met him as he turned upfield. The ball bounced out of bounds, so it never became a turnover, but the mistake was still a bad one.

Dallas may be willing to give him more rope, especially after losing Princeton Fant to a torn ACL, but if the team wants to make a point the way it did with Holden, Rogers could be in danger. You have to be able to protect the football.

Trikweze Bridges is also in a shaky spot at cornerback. The Cowboys feel secure about DaRon Bland, Cobie Durant, Shavon Revel, and Caleb Downs, but the depth behind that group is unsettled.

Bridges or someone else was supposed to grab the CB4/5 job, and that hasn’t happened yet, which makes Adoree’ Jackson’s rumored free-agent appeal easier to understand. Dallas has plenty of cornerbacks on hand, and rookie fourth-round pick Devin Moore is back practicing after an injury, so the team can afford to move on from Bridges if needed.

He did allow Seattle’s only touchdown on Saturday after getting beaten by Montorie Foster Jr., though he later responded with a third-down pass breakup. He’ll need more of those plays if he’s going to hang around.

D.J. Withers looks like the longest shot of the group.

The Cowboys’ defensive tackle room is loaded, and there’s not much room for anyone buried on the depth chart to climb. Withers tied Jay Toia for the most snaps among Dallas defensive tackles against the Seahawks, which tells you where he stands.

His 47.8 run-defense grade from Pro Football Focus reflected the trouble he had holding his ground, and the film apparently wasn’t kind either, with Withers getting displaced from his assignment more than once. Dallas usually tries to stash undrafted rookies on the practice squad when it can, and that’s Withers’ best path to sticking in the organization.

Von Millers Dallas Arrival Just Sparked An Awkward Cowboys Rumor

Von Millers move to Dallas was supposed to be about football, a veteran pass rusher joining a Cowboys defense that expects him to bring juice and credibility to the edge. Instead, the arrival of the former Super Bowl star has started drawing attention for reasons far removed from the field, with his long, complicated relationship with Megan Denise once again landing in the middle of the conversation.

Reports tied to a nightclub video have fueled a messy little rumor cycle around the Cowboys, but the details remain murky and unverified. Miller and Denise have had a long on-and-off history marked by past controversies and legal issues, and now the speculation has widened because of a separate sighting involving a man who only reportedly resembles CeeDee Lamb, leaving Dallas with an awkward offseason sidebar that feels much bigger than it can actually be confirmed to be. Trevon Diggs Just Put A Painful New Focus On His Cowboys Exit

Trevon Diggs next stop appears to be Seattle, where the Seahawks are taking a low-risk, high-upside swing on a cornerback who once looked like one of Dallas most dynamic defensive playmakers. The move gives Diggs a chance to reset after a rough stretch that included a difficult 2025 season split between the Cowboys and Packers, a sharp contrast to the form that helped make him a two-time Pro Bowl selection.

For Dallas, the interest is less about where he landed than how quickly things unraveled after the Cowboys moved on. Diggs recent decline has turned what once felt like a cornerstone talent into a cautionary tale, and the Seahawks are betting they can find enough of the old playmaking ability to make the gamble worthwhile. The only question left is whether this change of scenery can revive a career that has been sliding for months. [Read more 🡒]
