The Cowboys’ push toward a 2026 Super Bowl run is already forcing some hard roster choices, and veteran receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling is one of the names on the way out.
Dallas is releasing Valdes-Scantling, according to ESPN, even after signing him to a one-year deal in April. The move comes as the Cowboys trim their roster on Sunday and try to sort out a crowded receiver room ahead of Week 1.
That group is already led by CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens and Ryan Flournoy, with KaVontae Turpin, Camden Brown and Jonathan Mingo among the other players fighting for spots, as NBC Sports reported.
Valdes-Scantling has bounced around the league throughout his career, with stops already including the Cowboys, Kansas City Chiefs, San Francisco 49ers, Buffalo Bills, Pittsburgh Steelers, New Orleans Saints and Green Bay Packers. The fifth-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft has totaled 3,686 receiving yards and 219 catches, along with 21 touchdown receptions.
His best season came in 2020 with Green Bay, when he put up a career-high 690 receiving yards and six touchdowns. In 2025, he finished with one touchdown catch. NBC Sports noted that he played five games for San Francisco and five for Pittsburgh, finishing with four catches for 40 yards with the 49ers and 10 grabs for 80 yards and a score with the Steelers.
Dallas is also moving on from running back Jaydon Blue, ESPN reported.
The Cowboys are coming off a rough 2025 season, missing the playoffs after going 7-9-1.
