The Cowboys’ receiver room is already getting a jolt from an unexpected name.
Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and George Pickens have opened training camp in rhythm, and Dallas’ offense looks like it could be headed for another big year. The real intrigue, though, is down the depth chart, where the fight for the fifth and sixth receiver spots is shaping up fast. And in the first week of camp, undrafted rookie Camden Brown has already forced his way into the conversation.
Brown made the kind of play that gets attention immediately: a one-handed catch in the corner of the end zone, complete with toe-tap control to stay in bounds, as reported by Joseph Hoyt of the Dallas Morning News. He worked through contact with cornerback Trikweze Bridges, created just enough separation at the right moment, and finished with a grab that was difficult to dismiss. It was an eye-catching sequence, even if the practice was unpadded.
That wasn’t the only positive clip for Brown. Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram said Brown “has been one of the UDFAs making a strong early impression.” Another practice rep showed him securing a pass from Joe Milton while moving on the run, reaching across his body to finish the catch.
For a player trying to carve out a role, that’s exactly the kind of early noise he needed to make. If Brown wasn’t already on the radar, he is now, and the message goes to the rest of the Cowboys’ receiver group: Jonathan Mingo, Traeshon Holden, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Jordan Hudson, and everyone else trying to stick.
Brown joined Dallas among the team’s initial wave of signings right after the 2026 NFL Draft. His path to this point hasn’t been smooth.
He had a hard time catching on at Auburn before transferring to Georgia Southern, where he finally broke through with 65 receptions for 1,079 yards and 14 (!) touchdowns in 13 games.
Still, making plays in camp is only part of the job. For Brown to actually land on the 53-man roster, he has to show he can help on special teams.
That’s the standard for fringe receivers, and Dallas is not going to keep a fifth or sixth wideout who only brings value as a pass catcher. Not with Lamb, Pickens, and Ryan Flournoy already in the room.
Traeshon Holden learned that lesson last summer. He drew attention throughout camp, but he still missed the 53-man roster because he didn’t give the Cowboys enough on special teams.
His receiving work was good enough. The extra value wasn’t there.
Brown still has a long way to go, but he’s checked the first boxes in a hurry. In a wide receiver battle that was already worth watching, he’s become one of the most interesting names in it.
