The Dallas Cowboys trimmed their roster Saturday and one of the more notable moves was the release of Denzel Mims, ending his brief stay with the team as the NFL’s cutdown deadline approached.
According to Todd Archer of ESPN, the Cowboys informed the 28-year-old wide receiver of the decision on Saturday. Mims had only joined Dallas in mid-July, so his run with the club was a short one.
“WR Denzel Mims has been informed of his release from the Cowboys, per source,” Archer reported.
Mims came into the league as a second-round pick by the New York Jets in the 2020 NFL Draft. He spent three seasons with New York and has not appeared in a regular-season game since the 2022-23 campaign with the Jets. The Cowboys gave him a shot at restarting his NFL career, but the team ultimately chose another path.
Over his three seasons in the league, the former Baylor Bears standout posted 42 catches for 676 yards and no touchdowns. If he wants to keep his NFL career going, he’ll have to find another opportunity.
Dallas’ receiver group is still taking shape, but CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens are set to anchor the room. The final wide receiver picture won’t be clear until the Cowboys finish their roster cuts ahead of the new season, though Ryan Flournoy is projected to be the WR3 behind Lamb and Pickens. Jake Ferguson is also expected to remain a steady target from the tight end spot.
