Quinnen Williams didn’t need many words on Thursday to make his point. He had already said enough the day before, when the Dallas Cowboys’ defensive collapse against Arizona pushed him back to one word over and over again: execute.
Skip Bayless took that word and twisted it into something far darker.
On Thursday morning, Bayless said, “Quinnen Williams used the word ‘execute’ 32 times… I must tell you that during Sunday’s collapse against the Arizona freakin’ Cardinals, I wanted to execute several of my players during the game, execute them on the field. I wanted them to be executed.”
Williams didn’t let that sit. The Cowboys defender, acquired from the New York Jets at the 2025 trade deadline, fired back on X with a direct response: “It’s extremely crazy to say you wanted players on defense to be executed. You got to do better my guy.”
The post tagged Bayless and came after Williams had already made his stance clear in his Wednesday news conference. He wasn’t pointing fingers at scheme or coaching. He put the blame on the players themselves.
“We’re the problem, the reason why we are losing these games.”
He also kept hammering the same message when talking about the loss to the Cardinals. “I think the biggest thing is just execute,” he said.
“We got to execute. We haven’t been executing this whole season, and we executed for three quarters and didn’t execute the last quarter, and the film says it all.”
That loss still stings because of how it unfolded. Dallas fell 33-30 in overtime to Arizona after leading 24-10 with 14:20 left in the fourth quarter. The Cardinals scored four straight touchdown drives after Gardner Minshew replaced Jacoby Brissett, Minshew threw three touchdown passes, and Chad Ryland finished it with a 42-yard field goal in overtime.
The Cowboys’ defensive numbers explain why the frustration has been so loud. They’re last in the NFL in total yards allowed per game at 385.4, last in rushing yards allowed at 152.8, and 27th in points allowed at 26.6.
Williams has been one of the few bright spots. He leads Dallas with five sacks.
The standings only add more pressure. The New York Giants are on top of the NFC East at 4-2-1, Dallas sits second at 3-5, Washington is 2-4-1, and Philadelphia is 2-6. If the Commanders beat the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, they’d draw even with the Cowboys, though Dallas would still hold the head-to-head tiebreaker from its Week 2 win.
Bayless, who left ESPN for FS1 in 2016 and returned this year for a weekly “First Take” slot announced by Stephen A. Smith in September, had not publicly responded to Williams as of Thursday.
Neither had ESPN. The Cowboys visit the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.

Quinnen Williams Sounds Off As Cowboys Defense Hits Breaking Point
With the Cowboys sitting at 3-5 and trying to steady a defense that has repeatedly put them in a hole, Quinnen Williams has emerged as one of the few bright spots on that side of the ball. His production has stood out even in a difficult season, but he has also taken ownership of some of the units shortcomings, a sign of how much pressure is building around a group that has struggled to find consistency.
As Dallas turns its attention to the Colts in Week 9, the bigger question is whether Williams can help spark a turnaround before the season slips further out of reach. The defense has reached a breaking point, and while Williams has been part of the solution at times, the Cowboys still need more from everyone around him if they want to stop the slide. [Read more 🡒]
Cowboys Secondary Is Already Emerging As A Long Term Draft Priority
The Cowboys defense has been one of the early disappointments of the season, with the unit sitting near the bottom of the league in both total defense and pass defense. That kind of performance tends to sharpen the focus on the draft board, and one recent 2027 NFL mock draft already has Dallas looking to the secondary for help, projecting Georgia cornerback Ellis Robinson IV as a future fit.
Robinson has put together a strong college rsum and would give the Cowboys a young corner with the kind of upside teams covet when they start thinking beyond the current roster. The fit becomes even more interesting if Dallas eventually decides to move on from DaRon Bland, which would leave a clear opening for another long-term piece in a secondary that needs more stability. Colts Land In A Week 9 Spot With Bigger Stakes Than Expected
Dallas entered November at 3-5 after a loss to the Arizona Cardinals, and the margin for error has all but disappeared as the schedule turns to the Colts in Week 9. DraftKings Sportsbook has Dallas favored by six points, which only sharpens the pressure around a game that feels bigger than a typical midseason matchup for a team trying to steady itself and keep its season from drifting further off course.
The stakes go beyond one result on Sunday. Depending on how this one plays out, the Cowboys could be forced to make some hard decisions before the trade deadline, with the front office weighing whether to stand pat or make a move to try to salvage the season. For a team already in must-win territory, the Colts are arriving at a moment when the ripple effects could reach well past the final score. [Read more 🡒]
