The Cowboys may be tinkering with the defensive setup, but the bigger boost could come from the injury report.
Dallas is already trying to shake things up by moving play-caller Christian Parker from the sideline to the booth and adding veteran Mike Pettine as a senior defensive assistant. That’s part of the push to stabilize a unit that has struggled, but the real test still comes down to who is actually available when the game starts.
Two names that matter for Sunday night in Green Bay got a welcome update on Thursday. Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown and cornerback Joey Porter Jr. both took steps forward in practice, according to ESPN NFL Nation’s Todd Archer.
Overshown, out since mid-September with a hamstring strain, was limited after sitting out Wednesday. That matters because he had not hit that level yet, making Thursday’s session an encouraging sign.
Porter was a full participant and could even avoid a snap count. The former Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback missed last Thursday’s home loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers because of a sudden illness.
It’s still a small sample, but Dallas has only had both players on the field once this season. Getting them back and keeping them there would give the defense a chance to look sharper, even if the issues run deeper than two injured players.
The Cowboys enter at 2-3 and are trying to fix a run defense that sits last in the league at 168.4 rushing yards allowed per game. They’re also allowing the 21st-most passing yards at 227.0 per game. If Overshown and Porter are both active against the Packers, they’ll be tasked with helping clean up those numbers.

CeeDee Lamb Gives Cowboys A Needed Boost Before Packers Test
CeeDee Lamb gave the Cowboys a welcome midweek lift by practicing fully Wednesday and Thursday as they prepared for their Week 6 matchup with the Packers. Lamb took a bruised quad in Week 5, but he has been feeling better and appears on track to handle his usual workload when Dallas takes the field.
For a Cowboys offense that leans heavily on its top target, getting Lamb back at full speed matters just as much as getting him back on the field. He leads the team in receiving yards and touchdowns this season, and his availability gives Dallas a much cleaner outlook entering a test against Green Bay. [Read more 🡒]
Jerry Jones Gave Cowboys Fans A Rare Look At His Bigger Vision
Jerry Jones marked his 84th birthday by opening the doors to a side of his world Cowboys fans rarely get to see, giving FOX & Friends host Steve Doocy a tour of his Dallas mansion. The visit mixed personal history with franchise history, as Jones showed off memorabilia tied to the Cowboys past, including Super Bowl trophies, while also moving the conversation toward the clubs present and the work that has gone into reshaping the roster and staff this offseason.
The tour also offered a glimpse of the broader canvas Jones likes to work on, with art pieces and personal items filling the home and reinforcing how much of his life is built around legacy, taste and football. For Dallas fans, it was another reminder that Jones tends to think in terms bigger than a single season, even as the most immediate questions center on how the defense looks and how the coaching changes will settle in. Cowboys Fans Have A Lot Riding On Week 6 Beyond Green Bay
Week 6 brings more than just a date with the Packers for Dallas. With the NFC standings still taking shape, the Cowboys have plenty of reasons to keep an eye on the rest of the league while they try to steady their own position. The playoff race is already crowded enough that outcomes elsewhere can matter almost as much as what happens on the field in Green Bay.
Around the conference, a handful of other games carry real weight for Dallas because they can shift both the wild card picture and the draft-pick math down the line. It is the kind of week where one result in another stadium can change how the Cowboys view their path over the next month, which is why so many eyes in the building will be on more than one scoreboard.
