Cowboys Mock Draft Stuns Fans By Ignoring Key Defensive Need

Despite a strong roster of wide receivers, analysts predict a surprising draft decision by the Dallas Cowboys, leaving fans and critics questioning the team's priorities.

The Dallas Cowboys are in the midst of crafting a new defensive identity under the guidance of Christian Parker. While they missed out on seasoned veterans like Maxx Crosby and Trey Hendrickson, the upcoming NFL Draft presents a golden opportunity to bolster their defense.

Most experts agree that the draft is the Cowboys' best shot at adding defensive talent. However, some buzz is building around the possibility of an unexpected offensive pick. This would be a surprising move for Jerry Jones and seems to defy logic given the team's current needs.

Chad Reuter from NFL.com recently stirred the pot with his mock draft, suggesting the Cowboys might select Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate at No. 12. This seems puzzling, especially with CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens already forming a formidable duo.

The uncertainty surrounding George Pickens' future in Dallas, whether through a trade or playing under the franchise tag, adds an interesting twist. If Pickens stays, pairing Tate with him and moving him into the slot could indeed be enticing for Dak Prescott.

Yet, drafting a wide receiver at No. 12 feels unnecessary for Dallas. The new contract of Seahawks star Jaxon Smith-Njigba could impact Pickens' negotiations, but the Cowboys should prioritize retaining him, learning from past experiences like losing Micah Parsons.

Trading Pickens would change the narrative entirely, but as it stands, Dallas doesn't seem inclined to make such a move. With their current roster, adding another pass-catcher isn't a priority. Skipping on defensive talent for Tate could hinder their defensive progress.

Reuter also suggests Miami pass rusher Hakeem Mesidor at No. 20, a move that would strengthen their defense and make the Tate pick even more perplexing.

The Cowboys have somewhat addressed their cornerback needs by signing Cobie Durant, Derion Kendrick, and Corey Ballentine, but focusing on a cornerback, linebacker, or pass rusher in Round 1 remains crucial. The position not covered at No. 12 and No. 20 should be the target at No. 92.

While Carnell Tate is an impressive talent with speed and aerial prowess reminiscent of Pickens, he doesn't fit the Cowboys' current needs unless they plan to part ways with Pickens.
