DeMarvion Overshown didn’t need long to make his case in Oxnard.
On the Cowboys’ first training camp practice, new defensive coordinator Christian Parker already put his fingerprints on the defense, showing off the flexibility of his scheme and the kind of moving parts he wants in the secondary. Parker’s plan also includes using first-round pick Caleb Downs all over the field, a clear sign that Dallas intends to keep offenses guessing.
But the biggest early question around the defense wasn’t the secondary. It was who would take over as the green dot - the player responsible for relaying the calls and functioning as the quarterback of the unit.
During the offseason program, Overshown emerged as the favorite for that role, and after one practice, the Cowboys got a strong answer on how he handles pressure.
Todd Archer of ESPN.com reported a small prank Parker used to test him. While feeding in the play call, Parker acted as if the communication system had gone out and the line to Overshown had been cut. The point was simple: see what happened when the noise stopped and the pressure stayed on.
Brian Schottenheimer explained the moment during Thursday’s press conference and said, "Overshown got the defense into the exact right call."
That’s a sharp sign for a player entering a contract year and trying to establish himself as a real leader on this defense, not just a talented piece. It also fits the bigger picture in Dallas, where Parker already has a reputation for coaching up top defensive talent, including All-Pros Patrick Surtain II, Justin Simmons, Quinyon Mitchell, and Cooper DeJean before arriving with the Cowboys.
For Overshown, the timing matters. This is the first offseason of his pro career in which he has been fully healthy, and Dallas is hoping that finally gives him a chance to turn flashes into something more sustained.
His path has been rough. He missed his entire rookie season after tearing his ACL in the preseason, then started 2024 hot before another brutal setback ended his year in early December. That injury included tears to his ACL, MCL, and PCL, and it wiped out most of his 2025 season as well.
Now he’s back, healthy, and already showing the kind of command Dallas wants from the player wearing the green dot.
