Cowboys Latest Collapse Drew A Brutal Critique They Couldn't Ignore

Mike Tomlin's sharp critique of the Cowboys after their tough loss to the Cardinals sheds light on the pressing challenges facing the Dallas team this season.

Mike Tomlin didn’t waste any time delivering a blunt verdict on the Cowboys after their latest collapse.

Dallas dropped to 3-5 with a 33-30 overtime home loss to the Cardinals, and the defeat quickly became about more than just the final score. Coach Brian Schottenheimer’s team was left dealing with questions about personal responsibility, while Dak Prescott tried to absorb some of the heat and keep it away from his head coach. Then Tomlin stepped in during his Sunday Night Football appearance and went straight at the Cowboys.

Ari Meirov shared Tomlin’s comments, and there was nothing softened about the message.

“I saw a bunch of blinkers, and what I mean by that, if you're a blinker, cut your eyelids off. What I mean is, you gotta relish the thick moments, you gotta want to make the play, as an individual or particular units that wanted to grab the bull by the horns and win the game. Certainly their defense, we can spend a lot of time talking about that two-minute drive and things of that nature, but their offense had a short field when they had an unsuccessful onside kick at the end of regulation, and then they went three-and-out in overtime, and so I see a team that doesn't have anybody that wants to be the unit to secure victory, they gotta cut their eyelids off.”

The Cowboys also took a hit when tight end Jake Ferguson left early, and that helped contribute to a passing day from Prescott that finished under 200 yards. Javonte Williams led the ground game with 56 yards, but it still wasn’t enough to steady a team that was already spiraling on a day that also featured a NSFW explosion from Jerry Jones.

Tomlin’s criticism landed hard, but it matched the way the Cowboys have been playing. At 3-5, they still have a path to make a move in a weak NFC East, though they’re not looking like a team many will trust to make real noise in the playoffs, even if they get there.

Cowboys Just Lost Their Biggest Trade Hope On Defense

The pass-rush market always gets noisy when a contender starts looking for help, and Maxx Crosby had become one of the bigger names floating around that conversation for Dallas. But ESPNs Adam Schefter reported that Crosby is happy in Las Vegas and is not looking for a trade, which takes one of the Cowboys most intriguing defensive possibilities off the board for now. The Raiders, for their part, are not planning to move him at the 2026 NFL trade deadline.

For a Cowboys team still searching for ways to bolster its edge rush, that leaves the front office back in the familiar position of scanning the market and weighing other options. Dallas has been connected to players such as Josh Sweat, but Crosby was the kind of impact target that could have changed the conversation. Instead, the Cowboys will have to keep looking while the Raiders keep one of their defensive centerpieces right where he is. [Read more 🡒]

Cowboys Make A Surprising Week 8 Call As Key Help Returns

The Cowboys Week 8 inactive list brought a little surprise before kickoff against the Cardinals, with a recent draft pick among the healthy scratches even as the team got some important help back on the field. Dallas also has several other players unavailable because of injury or roster decisions, but the biggest takeaway from the list is that the roster is getting a boost at a time when every available body matters.

George Pickens and Kenny Clark are both active for the matchup, giving Dallas two notable pieces back in the mix as it tries to manage the early-season grind. The decision on Revel Jr. stands out all the more because of where he sits in the teams long-term plans, and it leaves one of the more interesting questions from the pregame shuffle hanging over how the Cowboys are sorting out their depth. Cardinals Exposed A Cowboys Problem Fans Have Seen Too Often

The Cowboys latest loss had the familiar feel of a team letting a winnable game slip away, this time in Arizona after building a 14-point lead and then watching it disappear. Dallas fell to 3-5, and the frustration around the defense grew louder after the Cardinals kept hanging around long enough to turn the game into an overtime defeat.

Jerry Jones did not add fuel to the fire afterward, even as criticism of head coach Brian Schottenheimer and defensive coordinator Christian Parker continued to mount. The owner said he is not considering any coaching changes, leaving the Cowboys to answer for another collapse on the field while the questions about accountability keep waiting for a different kind of response.
