The Cowboys had their eye on Brendan Sorsby long before the quarterback’s path to the NFL got sorted out.
According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, Dallas showed “high interest” in Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby when Sorsby put his name into the supplemental draft. That interest came even with the gambling issues that surrounded him, and it fit the kind of move a team like the Cowboys would at least explore if it thought it could land a potential Dak Prescott successor at a lower-than-expected price.
Prescott is signed through 2028, but the Cowboys’ long-term quarterback picture is still worth tracking. Archer noted that Prescott is under contract through 2028, and the team’s interest in Sorsby reflected the reality that looking ahead at the position is the responsible play. Prescott is the longest-tenured player on the roster and the longest-tenured starting quarterback in the league with respect to the team he plays for, with Aaron Rodgers obviously no longer in Green Bay.
Sorsby’s route to the league hit a snag when the NFL declined to hold a supplemental draft, which denied him eligibility this year. At one point, he was reportedly considering entering that draft, but he ultimately backed out and will now be eligible for the 2027 NFL Draft at large.
That 2027 class is expected to be especially deep at quarterback, with Texas’ Arch Manning potentially sitting at the top and more options available beyond him. For Dallas, that only adds to the sense that a quarterback search could be coming into focus next year.
