The Dallas Cowboys made a late move to shore up their offensive line, landing Broderick Jones in a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers as roster-cutdown day approaches.
ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported the deal Saturday, saying Dallas is adding the former 2023 first-round pick. In return, the Cowboys are sending third- and sixth-round picks to Pittsburgh and also getting a future fourth-round pick in the 2027 class.
For Dak Prescott, it’s help where Dallas has needed it most. The Cowboys have dealt with protection issues around their quarterback for years, and this addition comes just before the regular season as they try to patch that weakness.
The move also changes the competition for roster spots. Jones’ arrival likely squeezes out some players trying to make the 53-man roster, including Sebastian Guiterrez and Marcellus Johnson. Both are fighting for their place, and both entered camp with just one season of league experience.
Dallas had already added two rookies to the mix in Shiyazh Pete, a former Kentucky Wildcat, and Drew Shelton, who played at Penn State. Tyler Guyton remains the team’s blindside protector in that group, but Jones brings experience on the blindside as well and could become an important depth option for the Cowboys.
There are still questions, though. The 25-year-old has battled inconsistency and injuries during his career, which is part of why this move carries some risk. Even so, Dallas is betting that a new setting can help Jones settle in and make a bigger impact.
