Cowboys Just Lost Their Biggest Trade Hope On Defense

As hopes for a blockbuster trade fade, the Dallas Cowboys must recalibrate their strategy with Maxx Crosby remaining firmly with the Raiders.

The Dallas Cowboys may still be hunting for help as the 2026 NFL trade deadline draws closer, but the biggest name tied to them is apparently no longer in play.

Maxx Crosby has been the pass-rusher most often linked to Dallas, yet ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Sunday that the Las Vegas Raiders defensive end is not looking to leave and that the Raiders do not intend to deal him. Schefter said teams can keep calling, but the answer from Las Vegas is expected to stay the same.

"Maxx absolutely does not want to leave Las Vegas under any circumstances," Schefter says one source told ESPN. "His hope, though not in his full control, is that he remains a Raider for life."

That stance is a notable shift from where things stood near the end of the 2025 season, when Crosby was frustrated after the Raiders shut him down because of a knee injury. He eventually had surgery, and the tension between player and team helped fuel trade talk. Dallas made a competitive push, but Las Vegas and the Baltimore Ravens were the ones who reached an agreement first.

Baltimore was prepared to send two first-round picks to the Raiders for Crosby, but the deal collapsed after the Ravens gave him a physical and backed out. Once that trade fell apart, Crosby’s outlook changed. He turned his attention to recovery, and both sides appeared more willing to keep the relationship going.

That decision has paid off on the field so far. Through seven games, Crosby has 18 tackles and two sacks, and he has looked healthy while the Raiders opened 3-0 before dropping four straight.

That skid has only stirred up more deadline chatter, but if Schefter’s reporting holds, teams like Dallas can cross Crosby off the list.

If the Cowboys are still shopping for edge help, the next name to watch is Josh Sweat, who will face them Sunday as a member of the Arizona Cardinals. Sweat also has a connection to Christian Parker from their time with the Philadelphia Eagles, and he won a Super Bowl after the 2024 season.

Even so, there’s a real question about whether Dallas should spend a premium pick on Sweat. He’s a good player, but he’s not Crosby, and he wouldn’t be enough on his own to cover up the coaching issues that have dogged the Cowboys defense this season.

For now, the more sensible path may be to keep working on the problems already in-house, because that’s where the biggest trouble appears to be.

Cowboys Latest Collapse Drew A Brutal Critique They Couldn't Ignore

Another home loss left the Cowboys staring at a 3-5 record, and the postgame tone around the building was as bleak as the finish. Brian Schottenheimer talked about personal responsibility after the overtime defeat, while Dak Prescott stepped in to defend his coach as the criticism started to pile up around a team that keeps finding new ways to let games slip away.

Mike Tomlin added to that pressure from the Sunday Night Football broadcast, calling out Dallas for a lack of urgency and execution. For a Cowboys team already trying to steady itself after another collapse, hearing that kind of blunt assessment from an opposing coach only sharpened the scrutiny and underscored how little room there is left for excuses. Cowboys Make A Surprising Week 8 Call As Key Help Returns

The Cowboys Week 8 inactive list brought a little surprise before kickoff against the Cardinals, with a recent draft pick among the healthy scratches even as the team got some important help back on the field. Dallas also has several other players unavailable because of injury or roster decisions, but the biggest takeaway from the list is that the roster is getting a boost at a time when every available body matters.

George Pickens and Kenny Clark are both active for the matchup, giving Dallas two notable pieces back in the mix as it tries to manage the early-season grind. The decision on Revel Jr. stands out all the more because of where he sits in the teams long-term plans, and it leaves one of the more interesting questions from the pregame shuffle hanging over how the Cowboys are sorting out their depth. Cardinals Exposed A Cowboys Problem Fans Have Seen Too Often

The Cowboys latest loss had the familiar feel of a team letting a winnable game slip away, this time in Arizona after building a 14-point lead and then watching it disappear. Dallas fell to 3-5, and the frustration around the defense grew louder after the Cardinals kept hanging around long enough to turn the game into an overtime defeat.

Jerry Jones did not add fuel to the fire afterward, even as criticism of head coach Brian Schottenheimer and defensive coordinator Christian Parker continued to mount. The owner said he is not considering any coaching changes, leaving the Cowboys to answer for another collapse on the field while the questions about accountability keep waiting for a different kind of response.
