Zach Orr is staying active in this hiring cycle, and while he’s been in the mix for defensive coordinator roles - including a recent interview with the Chargers - he’s also keeping his options open. Orr is set to interview for an assistant position with the Dallas Cowboys under newly hired defensive coordinator Christian Parker, according to reports.
Orr had previously interviewed for the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator job, which ultimately went to Parker. Now, he’s back on the team’s radar for a supporting role on the defensive staff. There's some familiarity here - Orr and Cowboys offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer were both on the Jaguars’ staff back in 2021, so there’s a working relationship already in place.
Orr most recently served as the defensive coordinator for the Ravens, where he spent two seasons leading one of the league’s most physical and disciplined defensive units. His experience at the helm of a top-tier defense makes him a valuable asset, even if it’s not in the top job this time around.
Dallas isn’t stopping with Orr. The team is also set to interview Cardinals cornerbacks coach Ryan Smith.
Smith made the jump to the NFL in 2023 after spending nine seasons coaching at the college level. He’s another young coach with upside, and his work with Arizona’s secondary has put him on the radar for teams looking to refresh their defensive staff.
Since bringing in Parker, the Cowboys have been aggressive in building out the rest of the defensive coaching team. They’ve already interviewed several candidates for key positions, including former Giants defensive coordinator Shane Bowen, Steelers outside linebackers coach Denzel Martin, Eagles assistant linebackers coach Ronell Williams, and Vikings defensive line coach Marcus Dixon.
It’s clear that Dallas is casting a wide net, looking to blend experience with fresh perspectives as they retool their defense under Parker. Whether Orr ends up in Dallas or elsewhere, he’s one of several promising defensive minds being considered across the league - and the Cowboys are making sure they explore every option to get the right mix on the sideline.
