The Dallas Cowboys may have a real opening if they want to chase another cornerback, and Joey Porter Jr. has suddenly become the name to watch.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport, contract talks between Porter and the Pittsburgh Steelers are still at a standstill. The reporting also says Porter is open to playing elsewhere, and an early-season trade is very much in play.
“Sources say Porter, who had previously requested a trade from the Steelers , is open to playing elsewhere, and an early-season trade is very possible,” Schefter and Rapoport reported.
Pittsburgh, meanwhile, has reportedly been willing to listen, but the price is steep. The Steelers are looking for a “premium draft pick” that could even be a first-round selection, and the report says there has not been notable interest at that level.
That’s where Dallas enters the conversation. The Cowboys’ cornerback room should look better this season after the addition of Cobie Durant, and Shavon Revel has looked like a better player this offseason.
Even so, the position still comes with real uncertainty. Revel has to prove it first, and DaRon Bland remains a question mark after a few years of poor play and injury issues.
A first-round pick would be a heavy lift, but Jerry Jones has made it clear he’s willing to swing big if the right move is there.
“I'd give up the future to substitute where we are today,” Jones told the media in July. “As to a player, to give you an idea about what I'd invest, something substantive, to get the right kind of deal and improve us for Opening Day? I would.”
He doubled down on that thinking again last week while discussing the defense.
“The best way for me to answer that is not timing -wise, right on something this morning or this week, but if you look at it generally speaking, we’re in play. And that’s the best way to describe it,” Jones said.
If Dallas were to pursue Porter, a new contract would have to be part of the equation. Jones has already hinted that the Cowboys have the financial flexibility to make something work, even if he didn’t mention Porter specifically.
“The timing is conspicuously obvious. But yeah, we could use it for this year's team. The cap is fungible, it laps over into multi-years, 3 or 4 on parts that you make available,” Jones said.
“That’s hard to put your finger on. But that does show that we have really viable, serious room financially to make a trade if we wanted to right now,” he added.
Dallas currently has $23.3 million in cap space, which gives the team room to get a deal done now and sort out the rest later. The Cowboys also own first-round picks in 2027 and 2028, along with their second- and third-round selections in those years.
That could give Dallas some flexibility if Pittsburgh wants more than a straight pick package. The Cowboys might be able to lower the draft cost by including one of their corners.
With the motivation, the cap space, and the draft capital, Dallas has the tools to at least ask the question. And if the Steelers stay open for business, the Cowboys are positioned to make a real run at it.
