Cowboys Get A Prime Chance To Make A Statement Thursday Night

With the struggling Buccaneers missing key players and the Cowboys riding high, expect fireworks as star performances loom large on Thursday night.

The Dallas Cowboys head into Thursday Night Football riding the momentum of their Week 4 win over the Houston Texans, and the setup in Week 5 gives them a real chance to keep rolling. Tampa Bay comes in at 0-4, still hunting for its first win of 2026, and the Buccaneers will have to do it without Baker Mayfield and starting safety Antoine Winfield Jr.

That alone changes the feel of the matchup. With Mayfield sidelined, undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels gets the start, and he arrives with only one start on his résumé and limited time to get ready. For a Dallas defense that has been searching for a spark, this is the kind of spot that can finally tilt in its favor.

One place that should matter right away is takeaways. The Cowboys have gone seven straight games without an interception, the worst stretch in the NFL, and that drought has been a huge reason their defense has had such a hard time.

Daniels has already shown a willingness to put the ball in harm’s way, throwing three interceptions in 30 attempts this season. In this one, Dallas finally snaps the streak, with its first interception since Quinnen Williams picked off J.J.

McCarthy in Week 15 of the 2025 season.

CeeDee Lamb, meanwhile, is playing at a level few receivers can match right now. He leads the league with 37 receptions, 498 receiving yards, and 28 first downs via reception, and his Week 4 performance against Houston was the best of his career: 17 catches for 189 yards and the game-winning touchdown.

With Winfield out, Lamb should have room to work in the middle of the field, and another monster line feels well within reach. The prediction here is another game with at least 10 catches and 100 yards.

Dak Prescott also enters this matchup coming off a scorching second half against the Texans, and Tampa Bay’s pass defense, while ninth in the NFL with 817 passing yards allowed through four games, may not be as imposing as that ranking suggests. The Buccaneers have faced Cincinnati, Cleveland, Minnesota, and Green Bay, and only the Bengals offered anything close to an elite passing attack.

Now they draw a Cowboys offense that’s humming, and they’ll be without one of their top defensive backs. That sets up Prescott for another big night, with 400 passing yards and three touchdowns.

Cowboys Head Into Bucs Game With One Huge Line Question

Tyler Smith could be back in the mix for Dallas just in time for a trip to Tampa Bay, a development that would give the Cowboys a major boost on the interior of their offensive line. The All-Pro guard has been working through a thumb injury, and Jerry Jones made it clear that Smiths hand will be a key part of the evaluation as the team weighs his readiness for the Buccaneers.

The timing matters because Dallas is already sorting through a crowded injury report heading into the game, with several players listed as questionable or out. Quinnen Williams also pointed to the challenge of the quick turnaround between games, which only adds to the pressure on a line that could use all the stability it can get if Smith is cleared to go. Cowboys Fans Just Got A Less Comfortable Week 5 Warning

The Week 5 matchup between the Buccaneers and Cowboys already had plenty of intrigue, but the betting market has added another wrinkle for Dallas fans. What opened as a comfortable spot for the Cowboys has turned a little tighter heading into Sunday, with the line moving away from the heavy home-edge look it had earlier in the week.

Tampa Bays side has drawn noticeable attention at DraftKings Sportsbook even with Baker Mayfield dealing with a thumb injury and not practicing, making his status feel more like a background concern than a betting driver. The shift suggests plenty of people are willing to trust the Buccaneers to stay inside the number, which leaves Dallas facing a more uncomfortable week than it first seemed. [Read more 🡒]

Michael Irvins Wild Cowboys Persona Still Says Everything About That Era

Peter Kings old story about interviewing Michael Irvin in a strip club is the kind of anecdote that instantly pulls you back to the Cowboys most combustible era. Irvin was never just another star receiver in Dallas. He was part of a larger-than-life identity that mixed swagger, production and constant attention, all while the team was trying to turn talent into championships.

The off-field chaos was never far away, either, including a 1996 incident involving police and illegal substances that became part of his legend as much as his highlights did. Even so, Irvin still finished as a five-time Pro Bowler, retired in 1999 and reached the Hall of Fame in 2007, which is why stories like Kings still land with so much force when people talk about what made those Cowboys teams different.
