Cowboys First-Round Miss Looks Even Worse After Mazi Smith Setback

Once a promising first-round pick for the Cowboys, defensive tackle Mazi Smith's NFL journey hits another snag as he struggles to find his footing with multiple teams.

Former Dallas Cowboys first-round pick Mazi Smith is back on the market after the Miami Dolphins released him on Tuesday, another rough stop for a player who still hasn’t found a real foothold in the NFL.

Smith, drafted by Dallas out of Michigan in 2023, spent part of his time with Miami on the practice squad and showed up in only one game for the Dolphins. He didn’t record a tackle there, continuing a stretch that has followed him since he left the Cowboys.

Dallas held onto Smith for two and a half years before trading him to the New York Jets last season as part of the Quinnen Williams deal. His time in New York was brief and quiet: three games, no tackles. The Jets moved on before the 2026 season, and Smith landed in Miami, where the result was the same.

Since leaving Dallas, Smith has played in just four games, logged 69 total snaps and still has not made a tackle. For a former first-rounder once viewed as a possible answer at nose tackle, it’s been a steep and surprising drop.

That’s the part that stings for Dallas, too, because Smith was supposed to fill a very specific need when the Cowboys took him at No. 26 overall in 2023. At the time, the roster had playmakers like Micah Parsons and Osa Odighizzuwa creating pressure, but it lacked the kind of interior presence that could handle the dirty work against the run.

At 6-foot-3 and 337 pounds, Smith looked like the obvious candidate to do it. Instead, he never settled into a consistent role.

Dan Quinn used him in a penetrating 3-tech role, trying to tap into Smith’s speed and athleticism. When Mike Zimmer took over, Smith shifted back to the 1-tech, and there was real hope that the move would let him focus on run defense.

But that change didn’t unlock him either. If anything, it exposed the same problem: Smith wasn’t consistently winning with power and was often getting pushed off the line of scrimmage.

Now he’s searching for his fourth NFL team.

And in Dallas, the run defense questions haven’t exactly gone away. Even with Williams, Kenny Clark and Otito Ogbonnia on the depth chart, the Cowboys are still working to solve that problem.

Jerry Jones Just Added More Fuel To Cowboys Packers Tension

Jerry Jones opened an old wound in the Cowboys-Packers rivalry by revisiting one of his stranger memories from roughly 25 years ago, when a Packers fan reacted to a Dallas win by pressing her bare backside against his car window while his grandchildren were inside. Jones said the moment stuck with him, and he even described the cold as part of the reason the fans skin left a print on the glass. It was the kind of story only Jones could tell with a straight face, and it landed with the same mix of humor and needle that has long surrounded these two franchises.

The timing made it even more pointed, with the Cowboys and Packers already linked by recent roster business, including the trade of Micah Parsons to Green Bay. For Dallas fans, the rivalry has never needed much help finding extra edge, but Jones managed to add another layer just by digging up a bizarre episode from the past. Between the old memory and the present-day connection, the Cowboys- Packers thread feels as active as ever. [Read more 🡒]

Jerry Jones Is Feeling Heat Over One Cowboys Trade Decision

The Cowboys uneven start on defense has only sharpened the attention on one of Jerry Jones biggest personnel calls of the year. Through the first five weeks, Dallas has had trouble settling in on that side of the ball, and the trade that sent linebacker Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers is looking more consequential by the week.

Parsons is injured right now, which has taken some of the immediate heat out of the discussion, but the topic has hardly gone away. A recent report suggested Jones has regrets about making the deal, and that conversation figures to get louder once Parsons is back on the field and the Cowboys are still being judged against what they gave up. Cowboys Backfield Shuffle Says Plenty After Frustrating Week 5 Loss

The Cowboys kept their roster churn moving after a frustrating Week 5 loss, bringing back running back Emari Demercado to the practice squad while also adding guard Nick Leverett. Dallas also made room by releasing cornerback Alex Austin from the same group, a reminder that the back end of the roster is still very much in flux as the team looks for answers and depth at a few spots.

Demercado is a familiar name for the Cowboys by now, with NFL experience from his time with the Arizona Cardinals and two game appearances for Dallas in the 2026 season. Moves like this usually do not grab much attention on their own, but in a week when the offense is under a microscope, every practice-squad addition feels like part of a larger search for stability.
