Malachi Lawrence may not be the first name people throw out when they talk about the Cowboys’ rookie class, but his early words sound exactly like the kind of thing teams want to hear in camp.
Caleb Downs is the obvious headliner. Jaishawn Barham has also drawn attention because Dallas needs help at linebacker and new defensive coordinator Christian Parker may see him as a fit. But Lawrence, the Cowboys’ first-rounder, is working in the background while the buzz swirls around him, and what he does this season will matter a lot to the defense.
Lawrence recently took part in a charity challenge at Great Wolf Lodge Grapevine benefiting Make-A-Wish North Texas. The interview setup didn’t happen in the usual format, but he still answered questions that were passed along to him.
When asked about his goals for the season, Lawrence kept it simple.
“My goals are really just to get better, 1% every day. You know, keep continuing to learn from our vets. They’ve been telling me some great things and I believe in them.”
He also talked about the early connections he’s building with teammates, and it’s a mix of rookies and veterans.
“I’ve been bonding with both. From my rookies like LT Overton, Caleb Downs, Anthony Smith… we’ve been bowling. And some from my vets like RG [Rashan Gary], EZ [Donovan Ezeiruaku], Sam [Williams], just guys in my room and it’s been a great experience.”
Lawrence was also asked about his first impression of Parker, and he liked what he’s seen so far.
“It’s been great. He believes that we are a great group from top to bottom from where it starts, from the D-line to the secondary. And so we’re just coming together, building that bond, building that culture, and it’s just the identity, like he wants guys that are just versatile but also do their job.”
The event also had Lawrence spending time with children, and by all accounts it looked like a good day all around.
