Sam Williams is starting to make some noise at Dallas Cowboys training camp, and it’s happening while plenty of the spotlight stays fixed elsewhere.
With Rashan Gary, Donovan Ezeiruaku and Malachi Lawrence drawing much of the attention, Williams has been the quieter name in the edge-rusher room. But that doesn’t mean he’s fading into the background on the field. According to Nick Eatman of DallasCowboys.com, Williams was “dominant” during the team’s second practice, flashing the kind of versatility the Cowboys have long liked about him.
“Sam Williams has a big opportunity in front of him this year and he looked rather dominant during the team drills,” he wrote. “On two straight plays, he showed the variety of skill set the Cowboys have always admired from Williams, who ran stride for stride with running back Dominic Richardson on a wheel route down the field, and then stuffed the same running back in the hole on the next play. Also, Williams lived in the backfield, creating all kinds of pressure rushing from the left side.”
That’s exactly the kind of sign Dallas wants to see. The Cowboys tied for the seventh-fewest sacks in the league last season, so any edge presence that can consistently disrupt the pocket matters. Williams helping in the run game would matter just as much, especially with Dallas needing to tighten up there too.
There’s also a real opening here for Williams on the depth chart. The path to the third edge-rusher spot behind Ezeiruaku and Gary is there, but it isn’t handed to him. He still has to beat out Lawrence, with James Houston also in the mix.
That battle carries extra weight for Williams because a strong season could set him up for a better payday in free agency next offseason.
The encouraging part for Dallas is that Williams is doing this in a different role than before. He’s now working as an outside linebacker in Christian Parker’s 3-4 defense, rather than lining up as a 4-3 defensive end. Williams said earlier this offseason that the switch fits him.
“This is what I did at Ole Miss, so I’m happy," Williams said.
That Ole Miss stretch included 10.5 sacks in his final season, production that helped make him a second-round pick by the Cowboys in 2022.
Williams already has 8.5 sacks from his first two NFL seasons, but his 2024 torn ACL wiped out the entire year, and his return in 2025 was uneven. He managed just one sack in 17 games, which wasn’t a shock given how long it can take to fully regain form after that kind of injury.
Now, though, he’s showing early signs that the old version may be coming back. If he can get anywhere close to that Ole Miss level again in 2026, it would give Dallas a major boost and put Williams in a much stronger position ahead of his free-agency run in 2027.
