Cowboys Fans Just Got A Clearer Read On Schottenheimers Future

Stephen Jones has outlined the rare circumstances under which the Dallas Cowboys might consider an in-season coaching shake-up, despite publicly backing head coach Brian Schottenheimer.

Brian Schottenheimer’s grip on the Cowboys’ job is under the microscope after Dallas blew a 14-point fourth-quarter lead against the Arizona Cardinals, but the Jones family still isn’t acting like a midseason change is coming.

Schottenheimer enters Week 9 of his second season with a 10-14-1 record, and the pressure has only intensified after that latest collapse. The calls for his dismissal have spread quickly, putting Jerry and Stephen Jones in the position of answering for a coaching situation that has turned ugly in a hurry.

Even so, the Cowboys have only made one in-season coaching change since Jerry Jones bought the team. That came in 2010, when Wade Phillips was fired after a 1-7 start and offensive coordinator Jason Garrett took over, eventually holding the job through the 2019 season.

For now, both Jerry and Stephen Jones are still supporting Schottenheimer. Stephen Jones recently explained what would need to be in place for the team to feel comfortable making a move during the season.

Speaking on KRLD-FM on Monday, Jones said the Cowboys wouldn’t hesitate to make a necessary change if they “had a succession plan in place.” He also made clear that the team is still behind Schottenheimer.

That said, the expectation around the league is that a change during the season is not coming. According to Mac Engel of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the Cowboys “will not fire Schottenheimer during this season, but after it feels plausible.” Engel also noted that Jerry Jones dislikes the idea of paying a coach who is no longer actively leading the team.

That lines up with Jones’ recent comments, including his claim that paying top dollar for coaches does not automatically lead to success. The bigger takeaway is simple: unless there is someone already lined up to step in, the Cowboys appear set to ride this out through the rest of the season before making any real decisions.

Quinnen Williams Sounds Off As Cowboys Defense Hits Breaking Point

With the Cowboys sitting at 3-5 and trying to steady a defense that has repeatedly put them in a hole, Quinnen Williams has emerged as one of the few bright spots on that side of the ball. His production has stood out even in a difficult season, but he has also taken ownership of some of the units shortcomings, a sign of how much pressure is building around a group that has struggled to find consistency.

As Dallas turns its attention to the Colts in Week 9, the bigger question is whether Williams can help spark a turnaround before the season slips further out of reach. The defense has reached a breaking point, and while Williams has been part of the solution at times, the Cowboys still need more from everyone around him if they want to stop the slide. Cowboys Secondary Is Already Emerging As A Long Term Draft Priority

The Cowboys defense has been one of the early disappointments of the season, with the unit sitting near the bottom of the league in both total defense and pass defense. That kind of performance tends to sharpen the focus on the draft board, and one recent 2027 NFL mock draft already has Dallas looking to the secondary for help, projecting Georgia cornerback Ellis Robinson IV as a future fit.

Robinson has put together a strong college rsum and would give the Cowboys a young corner with the kind of upside teams covet when they start thinking beyond the current roster. The fit becomes even more interesting if Dallas eventually decides to move on from DaRon Bland, which would leave a clear opening for another long-term piece in a secondary that needs more stability. Colts Land In A Week 9 Spot With Bigger Stakes Than Expected

Dallas entered November at 3-5 after a loss to the Arizona Cardinals, and the margin for error has all but disappeared as the schedule turns to the Colts in Week 9. DraftKings Sportsbook has Dallas favored by six points, which only sharpens the pressure around a game that feels bigger than a typical midseason matchup for a team trying to steady itself and keep its season from drifting further off course.

The stakes go beyond one result on Sunday. Depending on how this one plays out, the Cowboys could be forced to make some hard decisions before the trade deadline, with the front office weighing whether to stand pat or make a move to try to salvage the season. For a team already in must-win territory, the Colts are arriving at a moment when the ripple effects could reach well past the final score. [Read more 🡒]
