Week 3 gives Cowboys fans a pretty clean rooting map, and it starts with the NFC East. Dallas has its own business to handle Sunday in Brazil, but around the rest of the league, there are plenty of results that would make life easier for America’s Team.
The first obvious targets are Philadelphia and New York. A Bears win over the Eagles would be ideal, though that may be a tall order with Chicago down to a fan in a Jim McMahon jersey at quarterback.
The Giants are another team Cowboys fans can gladly see lose, even if they’re facing the Titans. New York may no longer look like a true division threat without Jaxson Dart, but there’s no need to let them build any momentum.
Washington is the more interesting call. The Commanders were already a team that could have been staring at 0-2 even with Jayden Daniels, so his absence likely removes them from any real contention.
Seattle, meanwhile, is 2-0 and looks far more capable of creating problems for Dallas in January. That makes Washington the lesser evil this week.
Elsewhere in the NFC, Cowboys fans should be pulling for the Falcons over the Packers, the Cardinals over the 49ers, and the Buccaneers over the Vikings. A second straight loss for Green Bay would leave the Packers in a rough early-season spot and deepen the hole they’d be digging.
The 49ers and Vikings both come into Week 3 at 2-0, so seeing each take a loss would help keep possible NFC contenders within Dallas’ range. Arizona and Tampa Bay don’t feel like the kind of teams the Cowboys need to worry about later, which makes them useful rooting interests in this spot.
The same logic carries over into the NFC-AFC matchups. Cowboys fans should be looking for the Browns to beat the Panthers, the Jets to beat the Lions, the Raiders to beat the Saints, and the Broncos to beat the Rams.
Dallas has no real reason to care about most of those AFC teams, so the simple play is to root against the NFC opponents. The Lions, Panthers, Rams, and Saints all enter Week 3 at 1-1, so piling up losses on that group is a welcome outcome.
And in AFC-on-AFC games, Dallas has a different kind of stake. The Cowboys own the Steelers’ fourth-round pick and the Texans’ seventh-round pick in next year’s draft. That means, unless one of those teams is facing an NFC opponent whose record matters more than draft value, Cowboys fans will be rooting against them every week.
