The Cowboys’ secondary has been taking hits all month, and Cobie Durant’s name is now in that growing injury file after he went down with a hamstring issue in Week 2 against the Commanders. But the cornerback also found himself dealing with something even stranger than the injury itself: a fake rumor that spiraled online after a painful-looking sideline moment.
Dallas is already stretched thin on defense. Malik Hooker broke his arm in the opener and is expected to miss a few weeks, while DeMarvion Overshown also came out of the season-opening loss to the Giants with a hamstring strain.
Then in Week 2, Durant’s hamstring injury and P.J. Locke’s torn plantar fascia in his right foot added two more blows to the depth chart.
Stephen Jones said neither Durant nor Locke is expected to go on injured reserve, but the Cowboys can hardly afford more losses in the back end. Last season’s pass defense was the league’s worst, and that leaves little margin for error now.
The rumor mill, though, took Durant’s situation somewhere far more ridiculous. A viral in-game clip showed Cowboys safety Markquese Bell accidentally stomping on Durant’s sensitive area, leaving him in obvious pain as he lay on the turf in the back of the end zone. From there, an Instagram account called @fantasyexpert pushed a fake injury update claiming Durant "may need to have one testicle amputated after suffering a brutal accidental stomp from his own teammate Sunday afternoon."
Durant didn’t let it sit there. He reposted it on his own Instagram Story and shut it down with a blunt joke: "My nuts ain't going nowhere, fam," followed by several laughing-face emojis, "Stop lying."
For a situation that looked painful in real time, Durant’s reaction was pure dismissal. The joke landed, the rumor died, and the only real question left is how long he’ll actually be out with the hamstring injury.
That answer should become clearer when the Cowboys return to practice at The Star in Frisco on Tuesday afternoon before traveling to Rio de Janeiro for a showdown with the Baltimore Ravens.
