Cowboys Facing Big RB Decision As Najee Meets Raiders

Cowboys must act swiftly to secure depth in their running game as proven RB2 Najee Harris considers options with rival teams.

The Dallas Cowboys made notable progress in their ground game last season, with Javonte Williams leading the charge by rushing for 1,201 yards and scoring 11 touchdowns. This performance helped the Cowboys rank eighth in the league for rushing yards per game (125.6 YPG), complementing a potent passing attack led by quarterback Dak Prescott.

However, depth behind Williams, who recently inked a three-year, $24 million deal, remains a concern. Malik Davis ended last season on injured reserve due to eye and calf issues, while Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah are entering the second year of their rookie deals. This situation highlights the need for a seasoned running back, and former Steelers and Chargers RB Najee Harris fits the bill.

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reports that Harris will meet with the Raiders next Thursday, following a visit to the Seattle Seahawks. Harris, who suffered a torn Achilles last season, is a player the Cowboys should consider before he potentially signs elsewhere.

Williams shone brightly for Dallas, surpassing 100 rushing yards in two games and scoring at least one touchdown in nine. The gap between him and the other backs, however, is a concern.

While Davis matched Williams' 4.8 yards per rush, he only managed 250 yards and two touchdowns. Blue and Mafah, with 129 yards and 18 yards respectively, remain unproven.

Before his injury, Harris delivered four consistent seasons with the Steelers, each over 1,000 rushing yards and a total of 28 touchdowns, plus six receiving scores. Although his average of 4.1 yards per rush isn't stellar, his experience could bolster the Cowboys' depth.

While there's potential for Blue to step up as RB2 with more NFL experience, the Cowboys shouldn't overlook the opportunity to bring in Harris. His addition could provide crucial depth, especially considering the Raiders' struggles last season, ranking last in rushing yards (77.5 YPG).

The Cowboys have already bolstered their defense with the savvy addition of Cobie Durant. Retaining Williams ensures continuity in the run game, but pursuing Harris could further strengthen their backfield. Blue and Mafah might develop over time, but with current RB2 concerns, Dallas risks missing out if they don't act on Harris while he's still available.
