The Dallas Cowboys open their 2026 season on Sunday Night Football at MetLife Stadium, and the first real test for Christian Parker’s defense comes against a young New York Giants offense that already has plenty of attention attached to it.

Malik Nabers. Those are the names that jump out first, and for good reason.
Parker is walking into his first regular-season game as the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator with a lot to sort through. But the Giants’ player who could cause the biggest problem in Week 1 is Isaiah Likely.
New York brought Likely in on a three-year, $40 million deal in free agency, making him the new starting tight end after he moved on from Baltimore and out from behind Mark Andrews. The Giants clearly believed he could be more than a complementary piece, and this summer he has backed that up.
It may sound odd to place a tight end who has never posted a 500-yard season ahead of Nabers on the worry list, but there are real reasons for it. Nabers is trending toward playing, but there’s no guarantee he’ll be at full strength even if he suits up. Likely, meanwhile, is healthy and was one of the biggest standouts in camp.
His connection with Dart was the story of the summer. According to Dan Duggan of The Athletic, the two hooked up 44 times, easily the highest total on the team. The next closest receiver, Darnell Mooney, had 18 catches.
That matters because the Giants don’t have much receiver depth to lean on. They released Darius Slayton, and behind Nabers they are counting on Mooney, rookie third-round pick Malachi Fields, and a 33-year-old Odell Beckham Jr., whose last 1,000-yard season came in 2019.
So the Giants are going to need Likely to carry a major load.
Dallas does have options for trying to slow him down. The linebacker group has been revamped, with Jaishawn Barham, Dee Winters, and DeMarvion Overshown back in the mix, and Parker could also use prized rookie Caleb Downs if needed.
Even with that, Likely is a tough matchup. The 6-foot-4, 241-pound Coastal Carolina product is a different kind of tight end, one with enough athleticism to look more like a jumbo receiver. Don’t be surprised if he lines up in the slot during the game.
However New York chooses to use him, Likely figures to be a key safety valve for Dart. And that means the Cowboys can’t spend all their attention on the bigger names and let the tight end slip through the cracks.

He has also suggested he could open the season on the sideline while waiting for a new deal, which only adds another layer to the uncertainty.
