Cowboys Face One Big Concern Despite Favorable Week 5 Matchup

Can the Buccaneers overcome their offensive challenges and cover the spread against the Cowboys' favored team, despite key injuries?

Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys are back home on Thursday night with a chance to climb back over .500, and they come in as clear favorites against a Tampa Bay Buccaneers team that will be without Baker Mayfield.

Dallas already got a boost in Week 4 by beating the Houston Texans, and the offense has been carrying the load. Through four games, the Cowboys rank fifth in EPA/Play and eighth in success rate, putting them among the league’s better units on that side of the ball in 2026. They’re also just one game behind in the NFC East.

Tampa Bay, meanwhile, has been stuck at the bottom of the league in efficiency. The Buccaneers are last in EPA/Play, and they scored only 14 points in their Week 4 loss to the Green Bay Packers without Mayfield, who is out Thursday with a dislocated thumb.

That puts rookie Jalon Daniels in the spotlight again. Signed as an undrafted free agent, Daniels is set for his second career start after throwing for 148 yards, one touchdown and one interception against Green Bay. The matchup may be friendlier against a shaky Dallas defense, but the question is whether Tampa Bay can keep pace.

The line has already moved in Dallas’ direction. The Cowboys opened as 10-point favorites, but that number has dropped to 8.5 heading into Thursday night.

Even so, SI Betting’s Iain MacMillan is siding with the Buccaneers to stay inside the number. He points to how hard it is to trust Dallas’ defense with such a big spread on the board.

“I know the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' offense has been bad this year, and Jalon Daniels is going to get another start, but I can't lay this many points on this Cowboys team based on how truly awful their defense is. They rank 31st in opponent EPA per play, 32nd in opponent success rate, 32nd in defensive DVOA, and last in opponent yards per play, giving up 6.4 yards per snap.

Even when facing a depleted Buccaneers' offense led by an undrafted rookie at quarterback, I have no faith in them being able to hold a big enough lead to cover this spread.

We should also give credit to the Buccaneers' defense, which is fifth in opponent EPA per play and sixth in opponent success rate while giving up only 5.0 yards per snap this season.

With that big of a discrepancy on the defensive side of the ball, I'll take the points with Tampa Bay.”

MacMillan also likes the total to go over, saying Dallas should move the ball with relative ease while Tampa Bay showed enough in Week 4 to suggest another respectable offensive outing is possible. He expects the Cowboys to win with another 30-point performance on Thursday.

Cowboys Head Into Bucs Game With One Huge Line Question

Tyler Smith could be back in the mix for Dallas just in time for a trip to Tampa Bay, a development that would give the Cowboys a major boost on the interior of their offensive line. The All-Pro guard has been working through a thumb injury, and Jerry Jones made it clear that Smiths hand will be a key part of the evaluation as the team weighs his readiness for the Buccaneers.

The timing matters because Dallas is already sorting through a crowded injury report heading into the game, with several players listed as questionable or out. Quinnen Williams also pointed to the challenge of the quick turnaround between games, which only adds to the pressure on a line that could use all the stability it can get if Smith is cleared to go. Cowboys Fans Just Got A Less Comfortable Week 5 Warning

The Week 5 matchup between the Buccaneers and Cowboys already had plenty of intrigue, but the betting market has added another wrinkle for Dallas fans. What opened as a comfortable spot for the Cowboys has turned a little tighter heading into Sunday, with the line moving away from the heavy home-edge look it had earlier in the week.

Tampa Bays side has drawn noticeable attention at DraftKings Sportsbook even with Baker Mayfield dealing with a thumb injury and not practicing, making his status feel more like a background concern than a betting driver. The shift suggests plenty of people are willing to trust the Buccaneers to stay inside the number, which leaves Dallas facing a more uncomfortable week than it first seemed. [Read more 🡒]

Michael Irvins Wild Cowboys Persona Still Says Everything About That Era

Peter Kings old story about interviewing Michael Irvin in a strip club is the kind of anecdote that instantly pulls you back to the Cowboys most combustible era. Irvin was never just another star receiver in Dallas. He was part of a larger-than-life identity that mixed swagger, production and constant attention, all while the team was trying to turn talent into championships.

The off-field chaos was never far away, either, including a 1996 incident involving police and illegal substances that became part of his legend as much as his highlights did. Even so, Irvin still finished as a five-time Pro Bowler, retired in 1999 and reached the Hall of Fame in 2007, which is why stories like Kings still land with so much force when people talk about what made those Cowboys teams different.
