The Dallas Cowboys are walking into Week 3 with a little bit of momentum after knocking off the division-rival Washington Commanders, but the assignment ahead is a different level of difficult.
Lamar Jackson is next.
Dallas has already had trouble handling mobile quarterbacks through the first two weeks, with Jaxson Dart and Jayden Daniels giving the defense problems. Now the Cowboys are preparing for the former NFL MVP, and head coach Brian Schottenheimer made it clear the game plan starts with one goal: keep Jackson from getting comfortable.
The Cowboys want to “compressing the pocket” once they get to Jackson’s depth, closing things down in a way that forces him back toward the middle of the field. That’s where Dallas would like a spy or linebacker waiting to clean things up.
Schottenheimer said the objective is bigger than just chasing a sack. Disrupting Jackson’s timing and making him uncomfortable matters just as much.
“I think getting him on the ground is the biggest deal. You'd like to get the sack, but I think if you affect him, hopefully you're making him make poor decisions," Schottenheimer told the media.
"He's loose with the ball. Maybe he throws the ball in a double coverage.
"We've gotten to the point where if you move him off the spot, sometimes they become more dangerous, which is why we have to be better at containing. He's looking at the film.
He's seeing the seams that we've created and given to Jaxson Dart and Jayden Daniels, and he's going to be aware of that. But this is a new week.
It's a different deal. We've got some different things that we're looking at that we kind of like going into this game."
That containment piece is the whole ballgame for Dallas. If Jackson starts breaking loose, the Cowboys’ defense could get stretched thin in a hurry, and the Ravens’ passing game can start hunting for big plays.
The challenge gets even steeper because Dallas is dealing with a battered secondary and is expected to be without two starters and one key contributor. Against a quarterback like Jackson, every missing piece matters.
The Cowboys and Ravens meet in Week 3 at Maracanã Stadium, officially known as Estádio Jornalista Mário Filho, in the first-ever NFL game in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Kickoff is set for 4:25 p.m.
