Cowboys Eye Veteran Defender To Fix Defense

Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer sets sights on veteran linebacker Bobby Wagner to reinvigorate the team's struggling defense.

The Dallas Cowboys find themselves at a crossroads, striving to regain their footing in the NFL after missing the playoffs for two consecutive seasons. The trade of star edge rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers before the 2025 campaign has left a noticeable void on their defense.

Despite acquiring defensive stalwarts like four-time Pro Bowler Quinnen Williams and pass-rusher Rashan Gary, the Cowboys still need a defensive leader who can elevate the entire unit. Enter Bobby Wagner, a seasoned middle linebacker and free agent who could be the answer to their defensive woes.

Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer recently appeared on "Up & Adams," where he hinted at the possibility of pursuing Wagner. Schottenheimer, who worked with Wagner during his tenure as the Seattle Seahawks' offensive coordinator, expressed his admiration for the linebacker.

“You’re looking at one of the biggest Bobby Wagner fans in the world,” Schottenheimer shared. “He’s still playing at a high level.

So, we’ll see how everything works out, it’s an exciting time of year. But Bobby Wagner, total stud.”

Wagner, despite approaching his 36th birthday, continues to perform at an elite level. Last season with the Washington Commanders, he racked up impressive stats: 162 total tackles, nine quarterback hits, eight tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, four passes defended, and two interceptions. While he missed out on the Pro Bowl last year, his career accolades include 10 Pro Bowl selections and multiple All-Pro honors, cementing his future Hall of Fame status.

Though Wagner's future with Washington remains uncertain, head coach Dan Quinn has left the door open for his return. However, the Cowboys have a prime opportunity to bolster their defense and make a playoff push by bringing Wagner on board.

In 2025, they struggled defensively, ranking last in points and passing yards allowed. Adding Wagner could be the catalyst they need to break their playoff drought and potentially return to their championship glory days.
