The Dallas Cowboys have hit a bit of a lull in free agency, much like the rest of the NFL. While they've made some strategic moves, including bringing in safety Jalen Thompson and EDGE Rashan Gary, these additions, though solid, aren't exactly game-changers.
Fans were hoping for a splashier approach from Jerry Jones this year, but sometimes the pieces just don't fall into place. The Cowboys made an attempt to trade for Maxx Crosby and sign Nakobe Dean, but those deals didn't materialize. Had they succeeded, Cowboys Nation would likely be celebrating a very different free agency period.
This year's free agency kicked off with a bang, with deals flying off the table quickly. Unfortunately for Dallas, this left some key areas, like linebacker, still needing attention. The linebacker position is currently a glaring gap in their roster.
Rumors suggest that the Cowboys are exploring trade options to address this need. If trades don't come through, the draft offers another path, and they might just have a shot at snagging the top off-ball linebacker, Sonny Styles.
Styles, an impressive talent from Ohio State, was initially projected to be out of reach for the Cowboys' 12th pick after his standout performance at the combine. However, recent free agency moves by other teams could change that scenario. The Giants, Commanders, and Saints have all filled their linebacker needs, potentially clearing the way for Styles to fall to Dallas.
Of course, there are still eight other teams ahead of the Cowboys in the draft order, any of which could swoop in and select Styles. However, many of these teams have more pressing needs at other positions.
Could it be that the stars are aligning for the Cowboys? It certainly seems possible. If they can land Styles, it would be a significant boost to their defense, addressing their most critical roster need with arguably the best player available at that position.
