Cowboys Enter Week 6 With Tempers Rising And A Defensive Shakeup

Tensions flare as the Cowboys and Packers clash before their Week 6 faceoff, with Dallas making strategic roster shifts to bounce back from last week's setback.

The Cowboys and Packers didn’t wait for kickoff to bring a little edge to Week 6.

Before Sunday night’s game in Green Bay, the two teams got into a heated exchange in one of the end zones, with several players on both sides getting involved. Video from the scene showed the teams meeting up before kickoff and plenty of words being exchanged, though no punches appeared to be thrown.

ESPN’s Todd Archer reported that Cowboys players including cornerback Joey Porter Jr., linebacker Jaishawn Barham, offensive tackle Broderick Jones and tight end Jake Ferguson were among those caught up in the pregame dust-up.

“A little dust up between the Cowboys and Packers at the end of pregame," Archer wrote. "Saw Joey Porter Jr. getting into it.

Maybe some Jaishawn Barham, Broderick Jones and Jake Ferguson too. Didn’t see any punches thrown.

Referees were able to break things up.”

Archer added that the confrontation happened about 26 minutes before kickoff.

Dallas comes into the matchup with some frustration of its own after a rough Week 5 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a game in which the Cowboys stumbled badly against one of the NFL’s worst teams and an undrafted rookie quarterback. It has been 10 days since that defeat, and the Cowboys are eager to get back on the field.

Head coach Brian Schottenheimer said changes were coming in Week 6.

"I’m not going to get to a bunch of them. Obviously, there’s a competitive advantage.

But there’ll be some roster adjustments you guys will see. Some will be more noticeable than others, and some will be subtle as you look at it," Schottenheimer said, per Tommy Yarrish of DallasCowboys.com.

One of those moves is rookie edge rusher Malachi Lawrence moving into the starting lineup over Donovan Ezeiruaku. Schottenheimer had already indicated Lawrence could see more action this week, and that shift is now official.

Dallas also brought in former Packers coach Mike Pettine, who is working as a consultant alongside another former Packers coach, Cowboys defensive coordinator Christian Parker.

The Cowboys are hoping those adjustments, plus whatever else they unveil, can help stabilize a defense that has been one of the league’s worst through five games.

Cowboys Head To Green Bay With A Defensive Problem They Can't Ignore

The Cowboys head to Green Bay for a Sunday night matchup that already feels important to the shape of their season, and the attention naturally starts with the defensive side of the ball. Dallas has spent the week trying to figure out how to handle a Packers offense led by Jordan Love and a receiver in Christian Watson who can stretch a secondary in a hurry, while the other side of the matchup brings its own pressure points with Dak Prescott and Rashan Gary looming as major factors.

For Dallas, the biggest issue is simple and impossible to ignore: Micah Parsons will not be available because of injury. His absence changes how the Cowboys can rush the passer, how they can disguise coverages, and how much margin for error they have against a Green Bay team that is built to make defenses pay for mistakes. However the rest of the plan comes together, this is the kind of missing piece that can alter the entire night. [Read more 🡒]

Mike Tomlin Just Added To A Cowboys Coaching Conversation

Mike Tomlins criticism of the Cowboys players-only meeting after their Week 5 loss was already enough to keep Dallas in the conversation for all the wrong reasons, and now the ripple effect has stretched beyond the locker room. Around the league, Tomlin has become part of a broader coaching discussion as teams monitor the way this season unfolds and weigh how quickly the market could move if a hot-seat situation gets worse.

For Cowboys fans, the relevance is indirect but obvious: whenever a proven name like Tomlin enters the rumor cycle, it tends to widen the coaching carousel and sharpen the scrutiny on everyone around it. One NFC ownership group is reportedly at least open to that kind of swing if its current coach does not steady things, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with Todd Bowles have also surfaced as a possible fit, even though nothing official has happened yet. Cowboys Turn To Rookie As Pressure Builds On Struggling Defense

The Cowboys are making another change on the edge as they prepare for Green Bay, and this one puts rookie outside linebacker Malachi Lawrence in line for his first career start. Selected 23rd overall in the 2026 NFL Draft, Lawrence has been earning a larger look in practice and around the building, a sign the team is trying to find answers for a defense that has not settled into a steady rotation yet.

Brian Schottenheimer has been encouraged enough by Lawrences recent work to give him a bigger role now, even with Donovan Ezeiruaku being the player he is set to replace in the lineup. For a defense under pressure, the move is about more than just one game. It is also a chance to see whether the rookies recent progress can translate when the Cowboys need it most. [Read more 🡒]
