With the 53-man roster deadline closing in, a Cowboys-Vikings trade would not be a surprise.
Sunday is cutdown day across the NFL, and that usually creates a window for teams to deal from a spot where they have extra bodies rather than simply let a player walk for nothing. Dallas and Minnesota fit that setup neatly.
Minnesota’s need is clear: edge-rush depth. The Vikings already moved on from their top pass-rusher, Jonathan Greenard, in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this offseason, and while Dallas Turner and Andrew Van Ginkel still give them a strong pair on the edge, the group behind them looks thin.
The Athletic’s Alec Lewis projects Tyler Batty, Chaz Chambliss and Bo Richter as the backups behind Turner and Van Ginkel, but that trio brings very little proven production. Combined, they have just one career sack. That makes the margin for error awfully small if either Turner or Van Ginkel misses time.
Dallas, meanwhile, may have more edge rushers than roster spots. The Cowboys are locked in with Rashan Gary, Donovan Ezieruaku, Von Miller and Malachi Lawrence, which leaves one opening in the mix. That puts Sam Williams, James Houston and Marist Liufau in the fight for what could be the final spot.
Williams and Houston stand out as the names to watch. Williams had four sacks in 2022 and 4.5 in 2023 before a torn ACL wiped out his 2024 season.
He returned in 2025 and finished with one sack, though there’s reason to think he may not have been fully himself in that first year back. Houston has had a more uneven run, but he’s shown real pass-rush juice in two different seasons, recording eight sacks in 2022 and 5.5 sacks in 2025.
If Minnesota reaches out to Dallas, those are the two players the Vikings would likely ask about.
The price should be manageable. A Day 3 pick is the expectation here, and probably no more than a fifth-rounder. Minnesota has the draft capital to work with, including three fifth-rounders over the next two drafts and one sixth-round pick plus one seventh-round pick in both the 2027 and 2028 NFL drafts.
Whether the teams actually line up before the deadline passes is the question. We should know soon enough.
