Cowboys Defense Just Turned A Favorable Matchup Into More Doubt

Despite facing a winless Buccaneers team with an undrafted rookie quarterback, the Cowboys' defensive shortcomings left fans and analysts questioning their season's improvement after a disappointing 24-16 loss.

The Cowboys came into Thursday night with a chance to make life easy on themselves against a Buccaneers team that had been searching for answers. Instead, Dallas’ defense turned a manageable matchup into another round of public frustration, and the 24-16 loss only sharpened the criticism.

Tampa Bay arrived winless and without Baker Mayfield, forcing undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels into his first start. Daniels had trouble stringing drives together, which made it hard to picture the Buccaneers hanging around against a Dallas offense that was supposed to control the night. But the Cowboys’ defense never seized that advantage.

The problems started early and kept snowballing. Tampa Bay opened with a long first-half possession that chewed up nearly 11 minutes and ended in a Bucky Irving touchdown, helped along by three penalties on the drive. Dallas did manage a stronger close to the first half, but the breakdowns returned in the third quarter.

Irving ripped off a 72-yard run that set up an Emeka Egbuka rushing touchdown. Not long after, the Cowboys gave up a huge bust when Tez Johnson got free for a 64-yard gain, which led to another score.

Dallas also let an opportunity slip after a special teams mistake handed Tampa Bay another chance. Daniels and Egbuka then converted a third-and-21 to keep the drive moving, and the Buccaneers added three more points.

Later, when the Cowboys needed a stop, Shavon Revel Jr., filling in for an ill Joey Porter Jr., was flagged for pass interference on third-and-13.

The reaction was immediate and blunt.

The Cowboys front office and coaching staff are lying to themselves if they believe this defense is improved.

I know what this is saying, but I sort of think this might be one of the worst quarters of Cowboys football that I have ever seen.

Some of the heat landed on defensive coordinator Christian Parker, who is only five games into his tenure.

Christian Parker is no different than Matt Eberflus.

The numbers going into Thursday already painted a rough picture for Dallas. The Cowboys were allowing 28.0 points per game, ranking 28th in the league, and 389.5 yards per game, which sat 30th. They were also giving up 239.3 passing yards per game, 150.3 rushing yards per game, and had only two takeaways, tied for 29th.

Dallas was the only team without a defensive interception, and it had been giving up nearly 400 yards a game before the Buccaneers even took the field. Against a Tampa Bay offense that had been struggling, the Cowboys still couldn’t avoid the lapses that defined the night.

Dak Prescott Has Cowboys Fans Worried About More Than One Loss

Dak Prescott walked away from Sundays loss to Tampa Bay with his right hand wrapped, a detail that naturally caught the attention of Cowboys fans already frustrated by the result. Prescott said there is nothing wrong with the hand, and Dallas now has to shift quickly from the defeat to a matchup with the Green Bay Packers.

The performance itself gave the Cowboys plenty to sort through beyond the final score. Prescott completed 57.1 percent of his passes for 316 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions, a line that reflected both some productive moments and the kind of mistakes that can tilt a game the wrong way. With Green Bay next on the schedule, Dallas is left hoping the conversation stays centered on recovery and corrections rather than anything more troubling. [Read more 🡒]

Bucs Upset Win Left Dak Prescott Seething After A Wild Postgame Scene

The Cowboys surprising home loss to the Buccaneers on Thursday night already left plenty of frustration in its wake, and the mood only got stranger after the final whistle. In the stadium tunnel, a worker was heard calling Dak Prescott embarrassing, setting off a tense scene that quickly traveled well beyond the locker room and turned a rough defeat into a postgame flashpoint.

Prescott addressed the exchange afterward, making clear why it bothered him enough to demand the workers removal. The interaction added an ugly wrinkle to a night Dallas would rather forget, and it underscored just how raw things felt for the quarterback after an upset loss that landed hard in front of the home crowd. Dak Prescott's Postgame Frustration Has Cowboys Fans Debating This Team

After the Cowboys loss to Tampa Bay on Thursday night, Dak Prescotts frustration spilled into a postgame exchange that says plenty about where this team is right now. Dallas dropped to 2-3 in a game it was expected to handle, facing a winless opponent at home on a short week, and the mood around the building reflected the disappointment that followed.

Prescott took issue with a stadium worker who had labeled the defeat embarrassing, then seemed to pull back from that remark once the quarterback noticed him. It was a small moment, but one that fit the larger debate swirling around the Cowboys: whether this group is playing with the urgency and edge it needs, or simply feeling the weight of another letdown.
