Cowboys Defense Just Put Marist Liufau Under Real Pressure

The Dallas Cowboys are poised to bolster their defense with Marist Liufau's potential return from injury, as the team opens a crucial practice window.

The Cowboys are getting closer to adding a couple of defensive pieces, and one of them is back on the practice field already.

On Thursday, Nick Harris reported that Dallas opened the 21-day practice window for outside linebacker Marist Liufau. That gives the Cowboys three weeks to work him back into the mix before they have to make a decision on his status.

Liufau, a former third-round pick out of Notre Dame, had been shifted from a traditional linebacker spot into an outside linebacker role in Christian Parker’s defense. Parker saw enough in Liufau’s speed to believe he could win on the edge, and even with the adjustment being a tough one, Liufau had started to flash during training camp and the preseason.

His season never got rolling, though. Liufau was still fighting to stick on the roster when he fractured his forearm in the preseason finale against the New Orleans Saints, and that landed him on injured reserve to start the year. Now he’s back in the conversation, and Dallas can either activate him within the 21-day window or leave him on IR for the rest of the season.

The appeal is pretty easy to see. The Cowboys’ defense has had its issues this season, and while nobody knows exactly what Liufau will look like as an EDGE, the team could use his energy and aggressive approach.

He also had a strong case built around special teams, something Cowboys On SI’s Josh Sanchez pointed out during the preseason. Through the first six games, that area has been a concern too, which makes Liufau’s ability to help on coverage units even more valuable.

There’s also room for him to grow into more than that. At 6-foot-2 and 238 pounds, Liufau isn’t a classic edge presence, but he plays with enough burst to make you wonder whether he can turn into a pass-rushing specialist. He’s undersized, but he has never shied away from contact and should be able to handle himself in the run game.

Across two NFL seasons, Liufau has put together 80 tackles, 2.5 sacks, three pass deflections, and two forced fumbles.

Still, the more immediate return is coming Monday night. The Cowboys will also have linebacker DeMarvion Overshown back on the field against the Philadelphia Eagles for the first time since he suffered a hamstring injury in the Week 1 loss to the New York Giants.

Overshown has battled injuries throughout his career, and Dallas took its time with this latest one. If he comes back at full strength, it could give a defense that badly needs playmakers a real lift.

Cowboys Secondary Battle Could Force A Big Cornerback Change

The Cowboys have spent the first part of the season sorting through their cornerback depth while trying to steady a secondary that has already been tested during a 2-4 start. One of the more notable developments has been Ameer Speed earning more playing time than Shavon Revel Jr., with Speed holding the edge in both snaps and coverage production as the staff looks for reliable answers on the back end.

That trend has opened the door to a possible depth chart adjustment, one that would shift more responsibility toward Speed if the team decides it needs a cleaner fit in the secondary. For a defense trying to find its footing, the Cowboys are clearly weighing whether the current rotation is helping or whether a change at cornerback could bring a little more stability. Jerry Jones Just Added Fresh Intrigue To Cowboys Eagles Week 7

With Troy Aikmans ESPN contract set to expire after the season, Jerry Jones added another layer to the familiar Cowboys-Eagles backdrop by weighing in on what comes next for the Hall of Fame quarterback-turned-broadcaster. Jones didnt just frame Aikman as a voice on Sundays, either, praising what he can do beyond the booth and giving the discussion a little more texture than the usual end-of-contract chatter.

It also arrives at a time when the Eagles front office is getting its own nods, with Howie Roseman drawing praise from Jalen Hurts camp for the way he handled Hurts blood clot situation. With Jones and Roseman on opposite sidelines when Dallas and Philadelphia meet in Week 7, the game already had enough storyline fuel. Jones latest comments only sharpen the sense that this one will carry more than the usual NFC East edge. [Read more 🡒]

Caleb Downs Is Already Facing A Cowboys Problem He Didnt Create

Caleb Downs has already been asked to do a little of everything in his first season with the Cowboys, and that has made his adjustment more complicated than a simple rookie learning curve. Injuries and uneven play in the secondary have pushed Dallas to shuffle pieces around, and Downs has become one of the players most affected by it. A safety by trade who thrived in college in that role, he has been stretched into responsibilities that do not always match what he did best before arriving in Dallas.

The growing pains have shown up most clearly when he is lined up in the nickel, where the fit has been tougher than it looked on paper. Even so, Downs still leads the team in tackles, a sign that the production is there even if the comfort level is still catching up. For the Cowboys, the larger issue is less about one rookie adjusting and more about a secondary that has forced him into spots that ask a lot more than his natural position did. [Read more 🡒]
