Jerry Jones is shaking up the Cowboys’ defensive setup again, and this time the change is headed to the booth.
During a Tuesday radio appearance on 105.3 The Fan, Jones said defensive coordinator Christian Parker will move off the sideline and into the coaching booth for games going forward. The adjustment comes in the middle of a rough five-week start to the 2026 NFL season for Dallas, which has had serious trouble getting its defense on track.
The numbers tell the story. The Cowboys are second to last in the league in total yards allowed per game at 395.4, with only the Detroit Lions behind them. Against the run, it’s been even worse: Dallas sits last in rushing defense, giving up 168.4 yards per game on the ground.
This latest move is part of a broader defensive reset before Sunday night’s Week 6 matchup with the Green Bay Packers. On Monday, Dallas added veteran NFL coach Mike Pettine as a senior defensive assistant, giving Parker another experienced voice in the room.
"It's something we've been talking about for a long time," head coach Brian Schottenheimer said of the hire, via ESPN. "I think as we looked at everything, we had a chance to convince Pett that it made sense for him.
I think he's excited about coming in and adding experience and value. The most important thing for us was making sure we got the right guy, and I feel very, very confident that we did."
Kickoff for Cowboys-Packers is set for 8:20 p.m. ET on Sunday night.

Jerry Jones Sounds Fed Up With Cowboys Defense As Changes Loom
After multiple weeks of uneven defensive play in the 2026 season, Jerry Jones made clear he is running out of patience with what he has seen from that side of the ball. The Cowboys owner pointed to the defenses struggles and acknowledged that the team has already started adjusting, including moving defensive coordinator Christian Parker to the booth and bringing in Mike Pettine as a senior defensive assistant.
Brian Schottenheimer also confirmed that more personnel changes are coming on defense, though he stopped short of spelling out what those moves will look like. For a team trying to steady itself early in the season, the bigger concern now is whether these tweaks are enough to stop the slide before the pressure grows even more intense. [Read more 🡒]
Jerry Jones Just Added More Fuel To Cowboys Packers Tension
Jerry Jones has never been shy about leaning into Cowboys-Packers history, and he did it again by revisiting an old story from roughly 25 years ago that still seems to amuse him. He described a scene from after a Dallas win in Green Bay, when an irate Packers fan made her displeasure known in a way that left a lasting impression on him and, apparently, on the car window too.
The timing only adds to the edge around this rivalry, with Jones also pointing to more recent Cowboys-Packers dealings, including the Micah Parsons trade to Green Bay. For a matchup that has long carried plenty of weight on its own, Jones has found another way to keep the tension fresh, even if the full punchline is one he seemed perfectly content to let linger. Brian Schottenheimer Is Drifting Into Cowboys Territory No Coach Wants
Brian Schottenheimers start with the Cowboys has landed him in a familiar and unwelcome stretch of team history. Through a full season and five games of another, Dallas has yet to clear the early-season hurdle of winning a majority of its first five games, a pattern that has become a bad sign in franchise lore. The Cowboys have had 24 previous seasons in which they managed two or fewer wins over that opening five-game span, and only twice did those teams go on to make the playoffs.
The more troubling part for Dallas is how rare this kind of back-to-back start has been for a head coach in team history. Schottenheimer is now in a small club of Cowboys leaders who have opened consecutive seasons with two or fewer wins through five games, a group that has generally been associated with coaching eras the franchise would rather not revisit. For a team that expects to contend, the early returns have left plenty of room for bigger questions to linger. [Read more 🡒]
