Cowboys Defense Has A Playmaking Problem Fans Cant Ignore

As the Dallas Cowboys celebrate their victory over Houston, their alarming interception drought reveals a glaring defensive vulnerability that could impact their season.

Even with a Week 4 win over the Houston Texans, the Dallas Cowboys still have a glaring problem on defense, and it’s not hard to spot. The pass rush hasn’t been getting home, and the coverage has been shaky enough that opposing receivers have had too much room to work.

There was at least a little encouragement against the run this weekend. Dallas held David Montgomery and the Houston ground game to just 62 yards. But that kind of progress only goes so far when the secondary isn’t creating turnovers or forcing mistakes through the air.

That’s where the biggest issue shows up. According to Gridiron Stats and Info, the Cowboys haven’t intercepted a pass in seven games, which is longer than any other team in the league right now. No one else is even close.

After Dallas, the longest current drought belongs to the Detroit Lions and San Francisco 49ers, who are tied at three games without a pick. The Carolina Panthers and Tennessee Titans are next at two. Every other team has gone no more than one game without an interception.

That kind of number tells the story of a defense that isn’t taking the ball away, and that’s a dangerous place to be in today’s NFL. Passing attacks are tough to slow down as it is, but the good defenses find ways to flip possessions.

Dallas used to do that under Dan Quinn. Since his departure, it’s been a real issue.

And the last interception in that stretch didn’t even come from a defensive back. It was defensive tackle Quinnen Williams who picked off a batted pass from J.J.

McCarthy in the Cowboys’ Week 15 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. That turnover set up a touchdown, and it came on the same drive where Brandon Aubrey drilled a fourth-down conversion on a fake field goal.

For the season, the Cowboys finished with six interceptions. Safety Donovan Wilson led the team with two. Safety Markquese Bell had one, and the only cornerbacks to record picks were DaRon Bland and Trikweze Bridges, who each had one.

Cowboys Pass Rush Problems Could Revive A Reunion Fans Never Expected

Four games into the 2026 season, the Cowboys pass rush has not produced the kind of pressure this defense needs, with just four sacks so far. That kind of slow start tends to get teams looking for outside help, and Bleacher Reports Kristopher Knox has already floated a familiar name as a possible fix: Jadeveon Clowney, now with the Texans, who are also sitting at 0-4.

The idea is not exactly new in Dallas, since the Cowboys have shown interest in Clowney before, but the fit is where the conversation gets tricky. Under Christian Parker, the defense has its own structure and demands, and there are real questions about how well Clowney would slot into it if the Cowboys decided to explore a trade market that suddenly feels more urgent than expected. Jerry Jones Just Put Pressure On Two New Cowboys To Deliver

The Cowboys latest additions from Pittsburgh arrive with the kind of built-in urgency that follows any move for young, talented players on rookie deals. Jerry Jones made clear the club is not treating contract talks as the immediate priority, which puts the spotlight squarely on George Pickens and Joey Porter Jr. to show they can help right away. Pickens has 225 yards and no touchdowns this season, while Porter is just getting started in Dallas after missing time because of injury.

For a team that has spent plenty of time talking about expectations, the message is simple enough: production comes first, and everything else comes later. Jones suggested any future negotiations will be shaped by how both players perform and how the team fares, so these early weeks matter. Pickens has to turn volume into impact, and Porter has to build on a delayed debut, because the Cowboys are making it clear that both newcomers will have to earn their next conversation. Cowboys Stole This Rivalry Win In A Way Texans Fans Will Hate

The Cowboys walked out of NRG Stadium with a 34-30 rivalry win over the Texans, and it came with the kind of late-game finish that tends to linger in this series. Dak Prescott found CeeDee Lamb for the touchdown that sealed it, a sequence that let Dallas leave Houston with bragging rights after a tight night in front of a split crowd feel.

Even before the final score settled in, the game had already drawn attention for a different reason when Instagram influencer Ene, better known as @truly.ene, went viral for her custom Houston Texans outfit. The look added another layer to a matchup that already had plenty of edge, and it turned the night into one of those crossover sports moments where the football result and the scene around it both got people talking.
