The Dallas Cowboys finally got the kind of defensive day in Oxnard that they’ve been waiting to see.
With full pads on Monday, Christian Parker’s unit stepped up and owned the practice in a way that stood out after a summer full of questions about that side of the ball. It was a welcome sight for a defense that spent much of last season trying to recover from injuries and inconsistency.
That doesn’t mean one strong workout changes everything. Training camp is still training camp, and a single sharp practice doesn’t promise anything beyond that. But after what the Cowboys dealt with defensively last season, a day like this matters.
Shavon Revel was one of the biggest reasons why. The cornerback, who spent most of last season working back from injury, looked healthy and active, piling up multiple pass breakups. Some of those came while he was matched up with George Pickens, a sign that he’s moving past the knee issue and into a role where he can matter right away for a secondary that needs help.
Working against Pickens and CeeDee Lamb should only speed up that process.
"There's a reason those boys are top-five for real," Revel told reporters, per Nick Harris of The Fort Worth-Star Telegram. "You see it watching last week.
They make me better. They're sharpening my tools each and every day."
Cobie Durant also flashed exactly the kind of playmaking Dallas was hoping to get when it brought him in. The former Los Angeles Rams defensive back, known for hunting the football, picked off Dak Prescott in the end zone on a throw intended for CeeDee Lamb.

How Durant, Revel and DaRon Bland fit together is still something to sort out, but Durant’s track record is easy enough to trust. He has 11 career interceptions, including the playoffs, and Monday was another reminder of the instincts he brings.
For all the encouraging signs, the next step is the one that really counts: repeat it. The Cowboys defense has to stack days like this instead of flashing once and fading the next. With this much talent on the roster, there shouldn’t be much excuse for anything else.
Whether Monday was the start of something bigger or just a strong camp day will become clear soon enough.
