The Cowboys are walking into Week 1 with a chance to make an early statement, and a lot of that has to do with what’s happening on the other side of the ball in New York.
Dallas spent the offseason rebuilding a defense that wrecked its playoff hopes in 2025, and there’s plenty of curiosity around new defensive coordinator Christian Parker and rookie safety Caleb Downs. Based on the early signs from Giants camp, though, that unit could get off to a fast start right away.
Jaxson Dart has not looked comfortable so far as he adjusts to a new offensive scheme. According to ESPN Giants reporter Jordan Raanan, "Jaxson Dart and the offense have struggled the past few days." Dan Duggan of The Athletic backed that up, describing the offense as "disjointed" after early practices.
That’s not a great look for a quarterback trying to settle into a new system under offensive coordinator Matt Nagy. Dart has already thrown multiple interceptions in camp, and the reports say he’s been slow to read defensive looks and has been getting rid of the ball later than he should. For a second-year quarterback with people in New York hoping for a breakout, that’s a rough opening stretch.
It also sets up a dangerous matchup for the Giants in Week 1.
Parker’s defense is built to disguise coverages before the snap and force quarterbacks to sort everything out once the play starts. That kind of structure can frustrate even experienced passers, and a young quarterback making his first game start in a new system could be in for a long afternoon.
Dallas has the personnel to make that pressure count, too. Downs should have chances to impact the game from the slot, while safeties Jalen Thompson and P.J.
Locke could be waiting on the kind of errant throws Dart has been making in camp. If Rashan Gary and Donovan Ezeiruaku can get after him, the mistakes could pile up fast.
The Cowboys have also owned this matchup for a long stretch. Before a Week 18 loss last season that didn’t change either team’s playoff position, Dallas had won nine straight against the Giants.
New York is hoping to flip that script under John Harbaugh, but right now the setup looks much better for Dallas. Parker’s defense has a real chance to make life miserable for Dart right out of the gate.

Jerry Jones Is Standing Up For Tony Romo In A Big Way
Jerry Jones did not hesitate to back Tony Romo after the former Cowboys quarterback was placed on leave by CBS following his arrest in Milwaukee on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Jones made clear he still believes in Romos character and his ability to deal with adversity, a notable show of support from the owner who watched Romo grow from an undrafted prospect into the face of the franchise for much of a decade.

The first week of Cowboys training camp has offered plenty of reasons for optimism, with Dak Prescott looking sharp and George Pickens quickly becoming one of the early camp talking points. The deeper questions around this roster are still hanging out there, especially in the linebacker group, along the offensive line and in the pass rush, where the team is trying to sort out what it really has before the padded practices start to matter more.
One of the quieter but more important developments has been the early look at Shavon Revel, whose progress will be part of a broader evaluation once the intensity ramps up. The Cowboys are still waiting on real answers in a few places, and camp hype only tells part of the story when the competition gets more physical.
