The Ravens are heading into Week 3 with a real question mark hanging over their passing game, and it starts with Zay Flowers.
Baltimore is 1-1 after falling to the New Orleans Saints in Week 2, and the matchup with the Dallas Cowboys already looked important. Now the receiver situation has only gotten murkier. Ja'Kobi Lane is on IR, and Flowers is questionable after dealing with a hamstring injury that has already cost him time.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network doesn’t sound optimistic about Flowers being ready to go.
"And then Zay Flowers is dealing with a relatively minor hamstring injury, but he is a really good player; they want to keep him around long-term; they want to make sure he is available throughout the season. Did not practice yesterday; that does not bode well for his participation on Sunday," Rapoport reports.
Flowers has already missed the second half of the Week 1 game and all of Week 2 against the Saints because of that hamstring issue. Now Week 3 is in danger too, and while there’s still a chance he suits up against Dallas, the signs are pointing the other way.
Baltimore would be wise to stay patient here. It’s only Week 3, and pushing Flowers back too soon could turn a minor problem into something much worse. The Ravens need wins, but they also need Flowers healthy for the long haul.
The case for caution is even stronger when you look at what he has done so far. In just one half of action this season, Flowers has caught five passes for 150 yards and a touchdown.
If he sits, the Ravens will need production from the rest of the group. Mark Andrews, Rashod Bateman, Devontez Walker, Elijah Sarratt, LaJohntay Wester, and Chris Moore, who is also dealing with an ankle injury, would all be asked to pick up the slack.
