The Cowboys’ cornerback room is starting to generate real buzz at training camp, and the early signs are coming from a few different directions. After just five practices, nobody is ready to declare anything solved, but the group has clearly put together enough standout moments to get people talking.
The biggest competition right now sits at CB2, where Shavon Revel and Cobie Durant are battling for the spot next to DaRon Bland. That race has picked up since the pads came on, and former Cowboys receiver Jesse Holley said both corners “had great days” during the second padded practice.
Durant has been the steadier presence so far. He’s been making plays all camp, and one of the cleanest came on Day 5 when he broke up a deep ball intended for Marquez Valdes-Scantling.
MVS had a step on him, but Durant recovered and got a hand on the pass to prevent a big gain. He’s also already picked off Dak Prescott during camp.
Revel, meanwhile, made his strongest push on Day 4. Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram wrote that after “multiple pass deflections and physical play in coverage on Lamb and Pickens, it seemed like the light started to come on for the second-year cornerback on Monday as he recorded three pass breakups,”
That’s helped tighten the gap in the CB2 battle, even if Durant still looks like the more consistent option. If the Cowboys had to choose a starter across from Bland right now, Durant would likely get the nod.
Bland has also flashed when he’s been on the field, though his reps have been limited. Holley noted that Coach Parker and Schottenheimer are being cautious with him as he works back from the foot injury.
Another encouraging sign came from rookie Devin Moore. On Day 4, the fourth-round pick stuck with CeeDee Lamb on a rep in the end zone and forced an incompletion.
Afterward, Moore chirped Lamb a bit, showing some early confidence and plenty of edge. Lamb didn’t bite, which only made the moment stand out more.
Taken together, the work from Durant, Revel and Moore points to the same thing: Dallas has reasons to feel good about its secondary right now.
