And just like that, Cowboys training camp is rolling in Oxnard, and the first practice already offered a clear look at how different this defense can look from a year ago.
It was a light session, with the pads still to come, but Dallas still got enough work in to show some early flashes. Jaydon Blue opened with a 45-yard touchdown on his first carry.
Donovan Ezeiruaku kept living in the backfield off the edge. Rashan Gary made his presence felt by forcing a fumble that Caleb Downs recovered.
Those were only a few of the plays that stood out on Wednesday.
The bigger story, though, was the first-team defense Christian Parker put on the field for team drills. The unit looked almost nothing like the one Dallas rolled out last season.
The new names were everywhere: Rashan Gary, Quinnen Williams, DeMarvion Overshown, Dee Winters, Caleb Downs, Cobie Durant and Jalen Thompson all showed up as part of the starting group. Williams, of course, was still with the New York Jets last summer.
Overshown was still recovering from knee surgery. Now they’re part of a defense that has been heavily reshaped before camp even gets fully going.
Here’s how Parker’s first-team group lined up, via Jon Machota of The Athletic:
Rashan Gary at OLB, Kenny Clark and Quinnen Williams at DT, Donovan Ezeiruaku at OLB, DeMarvion Overshown and Dee Winters at ILB, DaRon Bland and Cobie Durant at CB, Caleb Downs in the nickel, and Malik Hooker and Jalen Thompson at safety.
There are still obvious questions in that lineup, and no one is handing Dallas a top-10 defense just because the names changed. But the talent level looks dramatically different.
Only four starters from last season were back in the same roles: Kenny Clark, DaRon Bland, Donovan Ezeiruaku and Malik Hooker. Everything else has been turned over.
Dallas moved from Osa Odighizuwa to Williams, which is a real upgrade even if Odighizuwa was a solid Cowboy. At linebacker, Kenneth Murray is out and Dee Winters is in. Murray was one of the worst linebackers in the league last season, yet still played the second-most snaps on the defense, according to PFF.
The only player with more snaps than Murray was Donovan Wilson, who was a mess in 2025 and has now been replaced by Jalen Thompson, a player described as versatile and ever-consistent.
The changes on the outside matter just as much. Kaiir Elam started seven games there after getting waived in the middle of the season, while Trevon Diggs made six starts before Dallas cut him loose. In the slot, Reddy Steward, a former Bears castoff, ended up playing the most snaps of any defender in nickel.
Now those spots belong to Caleb Downs, who started in the nickel on Wednesday, and Cobie Durant, who lined up opposite DaRon Bland.
That’s the kind of turnover that can reshape a defense fast. The Cowboys didn’t just swap names.
They moved on from Diggs, Elam, Murray and Wilson, then replaced them with proven veterans and a rookie with All-Pro upside. That changes the look of the entire unit.
There’s still a learning curve ahead in Parker’s scheme, and Dallas can always use more help. But after one practice, the difference in talent from last year was impossible to miss.
